Drs/midwives really can feel how far along you are even as early as 8 weeks! When I was pregnant with my first I remember my dr saying "yep feels about 9 weeks" and I was so shocked I asked her how she could tell. I guess even that early the uterus is pretty solid, and if you know what you're feeling for, it's easy.
