I loved my double sided blankets. We never used a regular receiving blanket except to support lo in the car seat because she was a winter baby and I couldn't swaddle without a swaddle blanket . I liked the ones that were different on each side-usually coordinating prints. And ours were about 40 inches square and that was the perfect size (width if fabric squared after salvage and seam allowance). I also really like it when I used a decorative stitch to topstitch.

Re: Oversized receiving blankets?

I love over-sized receiving blankets! My DD now 2 1/2 only likes the flannel receiving blankets. If I put any other type of blanket in her bed she throws it out. A friend gave me a few over-sized ones and DD and I both love them!

As for the double layers I would say print on one side and solid on the other.
