Best places to buy toddler toys...

I am hoping to start buying DD some Christmas presents now, she'll be almost 17 months at Christmas time. I want to buy her things like art supplies, musical instruments, blocks...stuff like that. But I want pretty traditional ones, nothing that lights up or makes noise. She has enough of that already and I want some things that teach her to use her imagination and be creative. I've looked at Toys R Us and most of their stuff either does light up or looks like it won't last very long. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
