Wool Blanket as a Crib Mattress Protector?

Hmm...while I'm on the topic, has anyone here tried using a wool blanket as a water-repellent crib mattress protector, under the bed sheet, during night training?

The only problem I see in that--other than making sure that the crib sheet is large enough to cover the wool blanket underneath--is that the mattress top would get too thick if my lo wets her bed more than once a night, meaning that I'd have to prepare the mattress with more than 1 set of a wool blanket and bedsheet!

Any comments?

I kept a fleece blanket under baby and I while co-sleeping. We never did use a crib. It worked great.
Are you planning on keeping LO naked at night? Or will you be using prefolds or something without a cover?

thx for replying, but since this is a rather old thread, i've experimented, and ended up using a wool blanket as a mattress protector. i find it breathes better than fleece and is water-resilient.

Good to know. I'm considering making my own wool blanket from felted sweaters.

I have done both -- used a wool blanket (for DH and my bed) and sewn a quilted one from felted sweaters (for DS's crib, and for naked time play mats). By far the wool blanket is easier, but I like that I can use soft merino for the naked play mats. For something under a sheet, however, I would go with a blanket -- much easier.

has anyone tried it atop a regular, non-waterproof (non-vinyl covered) mattress--say, larger than a toddler size mattress--for a young child, in case of night time accidents? does the wool blanket absorb it so as to protect the mattress completely, or only so much and then the pee still seeps through?

I don't have any answers, but was just wondering about wool blankets as we've been sleeping on pads with waterproof backing and it is too hot! We don't really EC, but always need something to keep all the bedding in the king bed dry as that's too hard to wash all the time So, thanks for the thread!

Ooh, might look to see what I have as that's a good idea, though maybe a bit scratchy.

Anyone have a suggestion of where to get a blanket, or the wool material to make one, that would be soft enough to lay on? I have one old one from when I was little, bit itchy, but might be good to try with a receiving blanket on top. I really should get more into EC, our hospital stay and feeding issues really derailed that intention. She currently can leak through diaprs pretty quickly, so if I'm changing clothes, might as well work at skipping the diaper part :P

Thanks for the thread ladies!

I use a wool piddle pad (crib sized) from organic grace and it was very lanolized. DD1's water from her sippy cup leaked all night and it soaked through :-( It holds throw-up pretty well, though, as long as you change the sheets pretty quickly. Definately doesn't absorb a lot per se IMO, just is water resistant when not bombarded for hours with steady wetness.
