I'm not on same page as cpnp with phd

I took ds to his 6 mo appt this week and bit my tongue a lot!! We didn't see the cpnp we normally see. The cpnp we saw is almost done with her phd in nursing so I'm conflicted. I nodded about tummy time (i wear him instead) and I cringed when she pulled his foreskin back a little since I couldn't tell her if he peed in a straight line. Then she was talking about my iron stores depleting and I should start food (he's ebf). In all my research I have found that I can ebf until age one no worries about iron...right???

Sent from DS Forum..... probably while nursing.... please interpret accordingly

Re: I'm not on same page as cpnp with phd

I am a pnp) If you dont want to start solids that is ok, u may want to add iron supplement however as ebf will start running low and why take a chance? It is easy to address. Hypospadius (hole in wrong spot) not something you want to miss on exam. It is much easier fixed in a small baby opposed to older one-thus the reason for a check. All the above being said, choose the medical provider that u communicate the best with. Trust is huge between medical provider and patient. I have been in practice 15 yrs and while this has only occured 3 times, I have asked a patient to choose a different provider as I felt there were trust issues and therefore wouldnt be able to meet the needs of the patient appropriately. Good luck!!)))

My Mood:
I think you can easily just increase your own iron if you're not ready for solids. Either a pill or some extra spinach, etc.

Re: I'm not on same page as cpnp with phd

I am not a PNP, but am a pediatric nurse. I would suggest not seeing this CPNP again since you weren't comfortable even though I don't disagree with anything she did or said. I agree with what the previous poster said regarding iron stores and checking for hypospadius. I also wonder if you mentioned babywearing in place of tummy time? If she wasn't aware that baby wearing counts as tummy time, you could have taught her something.

Also, what is the reason you do not want to offer solids yet? I would discuss this openly as well. Perhaps you could come to a compromise that you are both comfortable with (such as iron supplementation).

The iron content of breastmilk is actually not significantly affected by mom's iron level, so I would not worry about mom's iron intake unless she is anemic.
