Novice - bobbin question

I got a hand me down sewing machine from my SIL. A bobbin was already in the machine but I tangled it tonight and am having to redo it. I'm following directions, but the thread keeps winding up in the space below the bobbin and not on the bobbin at all. Any ideas why this is happening??

Any suggestions would rock since I'm so close to being finished sewing the worst pocket diaper ever lol

So you're trying to wind the bobbin?

I've got an old 80's Singer that does that some times if I don't have the plate pulled back for winding "just so". So I would start with jiggling your plate back and forth and tapping your pedal ever so slightly to see if the bobbin is spinning before you hit it full force to wind the bobbin. You will notice when the bobbin is not catching, it is not spinning. When it catches you will see the bobbin spinning and the thread winding on. HTH!

On my old Singer I would always wind the thread around the bobbin a few times then hold the thread tail as I started to press the pedal.
