Best fabric for trifolded doublers?

I want to make my own small trifolded doublers and don't have a fancy machine or a serger--though I *might* be able to borrow one.

What would be the most absorbent/trimmest option? All the well-used bamboo fleece I have is pretty stiff, and though I know it would be absorbent, I'm kinda stuck on the "softness" factor.

Also, if something would be good as one layer vs. needing two layers, that'd be great to know while I'm considering prices per yard.

Where do you buy your materials (bamboo/hemp/etc)? Basically, I understand a little about the fabrics we currently have in our stash, but have no idea where to begin on something like this! TIA!!
