Weird Question
I have a friend who's due any day now, I asked her if she was going to nurse and she said she was thinking about it. But when she had her first it was really painful bc she had had her nipples pierced. I asked if she talked to an LC, and she hadn't. So I was just wondering if any of you mommas know if that can make nursing hurt more throughout your whole nursing experience.
TIA |

Re: Weird Question
If she didn't try for long I could see thinking it's the piercing that is making it painful and not bad latch or other nursing issues.
I had had mine pierced twice before bf'ing (they had been out for years though) and it actually wasn't too bad once we got the hang of it. Nursing massaged some of the scar tissue that had built up and made them look normal again.

Re: Weird Question
It was likely poor latching and not the piercing that was the cause of the pain. though it could be painful if she has a ton of scar tissue. I've had a few patients over the years with piercings and I don't recall any issues with pain. She should have an IBCLC take a peek and observe a feeding.

Re: Weird Question
I had one side pierced and one not. I actually had less pain on the pierced side. The first week or so of nursing can be very uncomfortable I agree that she was probably too quick to blame the piercing.TMI but my lo prefers the pierced side since milk comes out of the piercing holes as well as the top. As a result more milk comes out faster. It's much faster for pumping as well.

Re: Weird Question
Sorry, my first (kinda rude) thought was to ask her if she took the nipple rings out first. :P I agree with PP's!

Re: Weird Question
I had mine pierced (took the rings out when I got pregnant with dd1) and have never had any issues. sounds more likely that it was a latch issue.

Re: Weird Question
Thanks for your input ladies. I hope she gives it another try this time around, and I'm passing on my IBCLC's number
