Did anyone have Medicaid and do Homebirth?

Michigan will not cover a facility fee if it is a freestanding birth center or the supplies. For a home birth they will not cover the supplies, but everything else they will if I remember correctly.

Really?!? I just assumed that they wouldn't, but that would be AWESOME if they did! Do you know where I would get this information? I guess I could call the number on my insurance card. I have Medicaid, but a specialty plan on top of that with United Healthcare. I will have to look into that! I would LOVE if they would cover what I would owe the midwife for a home birth!

I believe they must be a CNM for it to be covered by MI medicaid.

Yeah I forgot that part too. I read it on www.mothersownbirth.com under her financial agreement.

Ohio and Michigan Medicaid At this time neither Ohio nor Michigan Medicaid reimburse facility or supply fees for out of hospital birth. The facility fee is $1825 if you choose to birth at the birth center. There is a supply fee of $825 which includes tub rental, assistant fees, and routine supplies if you are planning a home birth. As with all our families, we are willing to work out payment plans, but these fees are your responsibility.

No, I will not give you a time sheet with my bathroom breaks and shower schedule. No, I don't need a 2 hour discharge summary of how to take care of a baby. UGH.. just so much.

Geez, mama, that's nuts! I've had 2 hospital births and neither had anywhere near the ivasiveness you describe.

Actually, VA medicaid does cover CPMs bc around here (northern VA), almost all the MWs take medicaid. And medicaid covers all the prenatals and birth, but there can be some OOP expenses. I can't afford those expenses which is why I am not having a homebirth. Birthcare MWs are CNMs and they do homebirths but at this time, they don't accept medicaid. Medicaid is notorious for giving MWs the runaround, saying they will pay everything and then the MWs have to chase them for payment, etc, which is why I think they have these OOP expenses, so that they get something. I did have a bad experience where I got dropped by a MW at 35 wks bc Medicaid wasn't paying for her previous births and she didn't want to get jipped on my birth (she wasn't charging me any OOP), so I got screwed. :/

Here in wa they cover home birth and a midwife. I have had two csections and my midwife does not carry malepractice insurance so they will not pay for the birth. They cover all prenatal visits. So I'm paying $2k for the birth and they will pick up may hospital bills if I was transferred.

I'm in SW VA and they did not pay my CNM last January.

Wanted to add that you can also look into bartering for all or part of a midwive's fee. any skill you have might be something useful to the midwife, even if it's housecleaning or paperwork--or something more unique.

I built a website and designed a logo for the midwife who attended one of my births, and my placenta encapsulation specialist bartered with me for henna art for her whole family when they went to the RenFaire.

I'm in Texas, and they took for-EV-er to approve my pregnancy medicaid--but all I even wanted it for was backup/emergency care. I ended up not even going to see an OB/GYN once, tho I had one picked out that I knew was fairly respectful to homebirth/alternative health. I had doula/midwifery care from several mamas I know who were happy to barter for the very minimal prenatal care I wanted.
