What do you do about 'toilet talk'??
Lately my 4yo and 2yo came up with a stupid rhyme 'Poos and wees and wees and poos and smelly shoes...'. They laugh and think it's hilarious and say it over and over again. Until i tell them to stop and we don't talk about poos and wees unless we are going to the toilet. I have made a rule now that I don't want to hear it, it's not allowed. I haven't thought of any good consequence yet, lol. The other day my MIL was around and they were saying it and she was saying it with them and laughing, and of course this all just made it worse. I was really annoyed about that! What adult encourages that kind of behaviour! I mean, I know that kids find toilet humour hilarious at this age, and you can't stop that. But she's not the one who has to take them around to other people's houses with them saying it!
What do you do about toilet talk in your house?

I definitely don't draw attention to it. My kids can sense my annoyance from a mile away so if I play it cool, it goes away.

Re: What do you do about 'toilet talk'??
I try my best to ignore it. When my willpower fails me, I then tell them they need to go to the bathroom since they keep talking about bathroom stuff. After the first few times of me taking them there, ("Well, you were doing potty talk so I took you to the potty!") they decide it's not really that great.
Of course, we do have relapses.

Re: What do you do about 'toilet talk'??
Yeah, I have to agree. Just leave it be and pick your battles. We don't encourage it (well, at least I don't, dh is the biggest kid in the house!!) but we don't make a fuss about it either. The only time we make a fuss about that kind of talk (and believe me, it can get much worse than a cutesy little rhyme!) is if we're at the table eating.
Don't fret about what others think, it's highly unlikely that anyone will be truly bothered or offended by something like that. In fact, coming from a 2 or 4 year old, just about anything is cute and most people will probably just smile. I know I would... Karen.

Re: What do you do about 'toilet talk'??
We haven't had a whole lot of that. But when it does come up we just say thats not something we talk about. We have a bigger issues with the laughing and joking after burps and toots. Not helped by DH who will say something like "good lord" and start laughing. I've been trying to teach dd to say excuse me and move on- kind of hard when dh makes such a big deal out of it. I try to remind him that he may think its funny now, but he would be horrified if she did it as a teenager so he shouldn't encourage it.

I don't really make too big a deal about it, I just tell them that we don't talk about it all the time and try to give them something different to say. Actually i think it may have been me who came up with the 'smelly shoes' (unfortunately they just incorporated it into their rhyme ). Anyway i definitely don't go along with it and say it WITH them! I can't believe MIL did that!

![]() Like other annoying little kid behaviors, I give it a chance to die a natural death. But, if the fascination doesn't wear off, we enforce the "feel free to say it all you want - in the bathroom - rule. It gets boring pretty quickly to just stand there in the bathroom repeating it (and, OP, I would let MIL know that she's welcome to go sit in there with them if she thinks it's so funny). |

Re: What do you do about 'toilet talk'??
they are allowed to talk like that at home if there is no company present. The teens are over potty talk, but I hear the words balls, package and nuts all. the. time.

Wonder how that would go over.
