Re: Utah mamas know any good midwives?
Who do you have on your list so far? Unfortunately, we don't have as many options up in the Northern part of Utah. I am in Ogden and went through this same thing with my last 2 births. I also saw your post over on the Utah thread that you said Logan area. What type of midwife do you like? Are you particular to wanting a CPM, or someone licensed, or do you not care? Are you someone that wants a lot of support, or would you rather the midwife be hands off and sit off in another room? From my area there is Chris Miller and Heather Johnston that I know for sure travel to Logan for births. Anne Pico (I think that's her name) is a CPM in Smithfield. And there is another woman I believe just over the border into Idaho, but i would have to look up her name. There are also a couple other up and coming midwives a bit further south but I'm not sure they will travel that far north.

![]() This will be my first home birth and first time with a midwife (though both my other labors were natural because I did my own thing at my home until I was ready and both time just showed up at hospital when I was a 10 and feeling the urge to push, lol). So I dont know much about midwives besides reading Ina May Gaskin and etc - ![]() The only real thing is she cant be someone SUPER crunchy/hippie (like you see in movies and etc) because thats part of why my husband is dragging his feet a little still ...lol. So far I actually only have both Chris Miller and Heather Johnston on my list because Ive heard such great things (especially about Christine) and know friends in the Ogden area who have liked them. ![]() |

Re: Utah mamas know any good midwives?
Oh, do you happen to know anything about insurance coverage? (I know Id have to ask the midwife and etc) but Im just kinda confused. I called my insurance today and they said yes its covered ... but the talked to my friend who went with Christine Miller (she has same insurance as me) and they didnt cover hers? Maybe the insurance person I talked to missed the part where I said HOME birth, lol, and only heard midwife??? Hmmm...

What insurance do you have? Obviously not Select Health, LOL! It *is* possible to have them reimburse some of your midwife cost (I have done it), but if you even mention homebirth they say 'no'. If your insurance does cover homebirth then you will need to find out if they require the midwife be licensed or certified. Both Anne Pico and Heather Johnston are, Chris is not. As far as I know, none will bill insurance for you, but you can very easily submit your own claims, the midwife just needs to provide you with the form. We really should talk ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Utah mamas know any good midwives?
http://www.olivebranchmidwifery.com/ There's Anne Pico's website. I've never met her or even talked to her, only looked at her site while researching for myself, so I can't give a review.

Re: Utah mamas know any good midwives?
And the blog for the Ogden birth group http://www.birthbabiesbreastsohmy.blogspot.com/
And their FB page: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Pow...612835?sk=wall if you scroll down and look on the right hand side of the blog, they have a link to the Logan group, but it doesn't seem to be working anymore. Maybe they quit doing it? I dont' know but you could ask the admin for the Ogden group and they may be able to tell you.

![]() ![]() Did/have you had a water birth? Im thinking Id like to try that or at least have one here just in case...? As for insurance, we have Blue Cross Blue Shield. I called today and was passed around to a few different service reps. All were very nice about the home birth idea, and the lady I spent the most time with at the end said yes they'd cover it just fine (normal deductible and etc but otherwise covered) ...but then talking to my friend (who had Chris Miller though, so maybe certification like you mentioned was a factor in her case?) has the same insurance and they wouldnt pay for hers. Im hoping we can make it work and figure something else out because right now money is something that would have to be a big deciding factor and I REALLY want a freakin home birth!!! lol Im all for talking sometime! ![]() ![]() ![]() I know nothing about the natural birth groups, that would be awesome, thanks! I was thinking about trying going to an LLL meeting or 2 but am kinda chicken to go by myself...especially when Im interested in it and love nursing, but dont really feel I 'need help' in that area. (though Im sure Id still learn a lot)... but yeah, if you find that info Id love to get it from you! |
