raw pics. Help me fix my living room
Ok, I am posting pics of our living room/dining room area. It is the area we all spend the most time in and in turn is a mess. It feels so disorganized and 'busy' I hate the floor plan of this house (double wide trailer) because I feel limited on how we can arrange furniture. So I am hoping someone with a fresh eye can tel me what to do to make this whole area flow and feel more functional.
Ok....here they go
Standing at the edge of the kitchen looking into the living room...
Part of the living room you can't see in the pic. The couch is a mess, been changing the 3 week old nb on it so it's piled with clothes and diapers and such.
Standing in the same spot looking straight ahead. The kids rooms are straight ahead as well as a bathroom
And looking right at the 'dining room'. We don't use it, we sit in the living room to eat but I want to start using it. There is that little half wall...behind that is the front door. It rarely gets used, we use the backdoor to come in and out, this one is only access to the yard and wood pile.
This is one of the most annoying spots to me. It is these funky counters that are pretty useless in my eyes. They pile junk really well though, that stuff never gets touched and has been like that for a long time
Alright. Whew, it's hard to share my mess lol. What I would like to do with it is this:
1. Move the table into a different area of the house. We have a room that is kinda like a mudroom, kinda a breakfast nook...I have no idea what it is intended for but it has linoleum floors and I would rather we all eat over it than the carpet.
2. Clear clutter
3. make the area feel more open and useful
4. still allow it to flow well.
We have VERY little storage in this house. We have 2 closets in the 3 bedroom house and no pantry...and the laundry room is not big enough to have the washer and dryer open at the same time (facing each other, front loading) The couches match and MIL got them for us for Christmas the yr before DD was born. I hate to get rid of them, but I feel like we are too crowded with all the baby/toddler gear. I do not want DD playing in her room, I want her out here with the family so I want her toys out here. The chairs have to stay. the dark one is DH's (was his dad's) and it's a recliner. The light brown one is mine and it's a glider. So neither can be right against a wall. We have put them against the wall before and they have to be pulled out so far that they take up more room it seems.
I am fine with going as simple as just cleaning and re organizing to repainting and tearing things out. Though the latter would take work from DH too so it will take a lot longer (as in mths-yrs)
Anyone have ANY ideas of what to do with this space??? It drives me batty. How would you arrange the furniture? How would you still make it flow? I just need ideas.
It's been slow going. I do have 2 small kids lo but we have been working on other parts of the house as well. So here is a little update. Still totally a work in progress but it is getting better.
Living room after (a frb of some ffs stuff I ned to list and the pics I am trying to decide what to do with on the couch, temporary) The cords in the corner are something dh is going to deal with....someday (they are attached to the wall so can't just move them)
The far corner gets to me. DD likes to go back there and hide and I don't like that. I don't know what to do with it.
The catch all strange counter, it still bothers me. Most if the stuff is dh's, we just need to figure out where to put it!
The couch here will be leaving as soon as mil comes and picks it up. Then this area will have the kitchen, table, rocking horse, and trofast.
I didn't get a good pic to show how much floor space we gained and now I am but it really has made a difference and has made it easier to keep it clean. I know there is still a good bit of baby gear but soon ds will outgrow it and it will go. The highchair is a fold up that comes out for lunch when I am home alone with both kids during the day. We got rid of the table and got a new one that better suites our needs, now it is in the 'breakfast nook' and we eat dinner at the table every night.
Still a lot of work, but it is getting better and I am proud!
