Mainstays (Walmart) canning jars

I don't normally shop at Wally World, but found myself there the other day. I decided to check prices on canning jars, and I found that they now carry their own brand. They were completely unmarked, except for "China" on the bottom, and they are a different shape than Ball's regular mouth pints. The jar didn't seem as heavy as the Ball pints, but I didn't have any way to verify this, as there were no open packages of Ball jars.

Has anyone used these? Know anything about them?

I have some, I don't like them as much as the Ball jars. I haven't canned with them, but I have used them to freeze soups, and even taking all proper precautions, several of them broke. The Ball jars I used did not break.

fortheboys - Did you pressure can or waterbath? I have a semi-rational fear of jars blowing up in my pressure canner...

I have some, but haven't used them for canning. I used them for making yogurt, though, and they worked great and were very inexpensive.

We used them for gifting salsa (DH makes some awesome salsa and here in Texas it is a desired gift lol) and the low cost was wonderful. However, we noticed that they don't seem to hold a seal as well for long-term storage, so we use other brands for that. I have not frozen in them, so I can't speak to that. HTH!

Re: Mainstays (Walmart) canning jars

Thanks for all the input, mamas. After some additional internet research, I've decided against the Walmart jars. Because they are made in China, other folks have voiced concern about lead in the glass, which could leach into food at higher temperatures. I also saw a few posts stating that the jars were found in the crafting section, not the kitchen/canning section, leading me to question whether they are even intended to stand up to year-after-year canning. As some here mentioned, the lids are considered lower quality, so by the time I factor in replacing the lids, I may as well spend the extra $2 and get Ball jars (which are made in the USA, so it's an additional perk).

Thanks again!
