Will wool jersey work for shorties?

Can I use the wool jersey for shorties for DS, one layer with a hammock? Will it work for waterproof-ness? He needs some woolie goodness for summer, but interlock is $$$ If jersey can work, then he will be set for summer with a yard or two, which would be great
