Question Floating Uterus?

First of all, a disclaimer....

I'm freaking out to begin with because before this baby I had two miscarriages, miscarried the twin of my youngest child, and had a miscarriage before that (so this is my 8th pregnancy and I have 3 kids)

As if that weren't enough to deal with, when I mentioned to my OB that I seemed to be measuring big (only 12 weeks, but my uterus is almost to my navel) she said that yes, my cervix is really high and I'm measuring closer to 16 weeks because I have a "floating uterus".

I've never heard of this and the OB didn't seemed concerned, but of course I had to google it....and I can't find anything. Could this be a complication? Will the uterus settle as the baby gets bigger? I'll have to have a planned c/s with this baby, if that makes a difference.

That's odd because I was under the impression that it's SUPPOSED to float

If you google "ligaments pregnant uterus" and go to images you'll see that I'm talking about...

See how the uterus attaches to the sacrum? And then theres the round ligament that attaches to the pelvis area. I remember reading about how people used to believe that the uterus was free floating and unattached, which is obviously not true. Sounds like perhaps your OB was saying your uterus is simply higher than average? In which case I would think it would settle with the weight of the baby but I'd ask your OB to clarify next time you see her.

Re: Floating Uterus?

Found this...

The uterus is anchored into the pelvis but a series of ligaments (unless your Victorian doctor has diagnosed you with the dreaded floating uterus of hysteria!).

Maybe you need a younger OB

I found that same link and had to laugh because my OB looks about 30...so I don't think I could get one younger!

Also, I remembered that I had a slight hernia near my naval with the last pregnancy, so I wonder if the muscles have just weakened and are allowing the uterus to move more?
