Is smelly pee normal?

Yeah, uhm, my pee stinks. And it has a swirly substance in it. Is this my body just extricating extra hormones?

Oh, and are prenatal vitamins REALLY necessary? They make me constipated. I haven't gone #2 in like......2 days and I'm starting to hurt.

Re: Is smelly pee normal?

Yes prenatals are necessary. Invest in some probiotic yogurt and stool softeners to help with constipation. Trust me, if you're anything like me, I was super slack with my prenatals last pregnancy and as a result I had really low iron and had to go on iron supplements, those are like 10 times worse for constipation. So suck it up and take your vitamins.

I have no experience with smelly pee though, but I just googled it and it seems to be pretty normal, especially since pregnancy makes your sense of smell stronger.

My Mood:
I say discuss your prenatals with your provider. I told my mw that they were making me miserably ill. She checked my iron to be sure I was nowhere near anemic, and said I could just take some flintstones and my folic acid while all of this first trimester nastiness makes it so complicated. She said we'd talk more about formal prenatals in the second tri, because there are some that are more gentle, especially in regards to the iron overdose.

Hmm, my prenatals make my pee green...I don't know about smelly, except to agree with Amber than everything is smelly.

Also, constipation is also a symptom of the massive amounts of progesterone your body produces in the first trimester.

The swirly stuff in your pee is probably vaginal discharge that comes out when you pee. Oh joy! I have that too.

DDC

these prenatals are made with raw and natural ingredients so the iron isn't constipating

I have stinky pee too

Try taking your prenatals after a snack at bedtime. That helped me tons last time.

I thought the smelly pee was just a stronger sense of smell.

Constipated here too. Keep drinking lots of water n fruits... Hemoroids are no fun so don't let it get there.

Re: Is smelly pee normal?

yeah, you can talk to your doc about prenatals and maybe take something different - if your iron is not low you can try some with less iron in them. That's usually what stops you up. And on the fruits, veggies, and water, as well as yogurt. It really makes a difference!

Re: Is smelly pee normal?

Oh my pee definetly smells different than normal and it seems more cloudy than normal. Make sure to take the prenatals at night and just skip the ones with DHA (I know its good for you but it really makes me sick!). Don't take zofran if you are really constipated it will make it worse. Try taking magnesium citrate for constipation. You can buy it as pills but it works better as the drink. You can buy the drink from walgreens/cvs/grocery store. I prefer the kind from the health food store called the 'natural calm' drink.

I suffer from constipation really bad always and this is the only natural way I've found to relieve it. Believe me, I've tried everything. Colace pills are a joke!! Just FYI, I've been to the ER before because I thought I was having appendicitis and they diagnosed it as constipation. They said to take the magnesium citrate drink and an enema. So if it gets really bad where you are hunched over in pain you can give yourself an enema (GROSS but I've done it before)

*I was already assuming you are drinking plenty of water and doing the dietary things reccommended.
