night weaning older toddler

Has anyone night weaned a 2 yr old? Im at the point im really done with my ds nursing at night. He nurses at night more than in the day. I keep going back and forth because he is my last baby and im worried he will completely wean if i night wean (which would be fine if it was his choice, not like i brought it on). Anyway, i havent bf'd any of my other babies at night this long, so i dont know what to do.

My ds was 18 months, so pretty big difference in a lot of ways from a two year old, but all it did was make his first morning nurse more important to him. At two, its the only time he still nurses (he started weaning when i got pregnant with my miscarriage) and will not skip it for anything.

Night weaning can result in complete weaning. BUT, it is certainly probable that it won't. Know your child mama. Does he seem ready for this major milestone? Are you prepared to night wean but still have him wake at night and not have nursing as an instant fix?

I night weaned my 2 yo when I was 6 mo pregnant with her younger sister. She still, at 4yo, wakes regularly at night. She has been completely weaned for almost a year, so it has NOTHING to do with nursing.

For suggestions on how to make it happen, look up "Jay Gordon Night Weaning" (can be found online) and the "No Cry Sleep Solution For Toddlers" by Elizabeth Pantley (Book).

Re: night weaning older toddler

I nightweaned DD at 2.5 once her 2yr molars FINALLY finished and I was so done. We'd tried a couple of times to gently nightwean and it didn't take. Meaning, after a couple of nights trying me and/or DH comforting her in other ways, she was still getting so upset and no one was sleeping....so we trusted her and our guts and gave it up. When we tried the same basic tactics the last time at 2.5, after a night or so she was noticeably better. So I guess my advice is, listen to your gut and your baby. There's no harm in giving a gentle nightweaning a try for a couple of nights and seeing how it goes....

Oh and for the record, it didn't come close to triggering a complete wean. She's still nursing once a day at 4.5! But she always was a real boob kid.

Im just so surprised he doesnt sttn by now. All my other boys did by this age. I dont understand why he keeps waking up. He'll be 2.5 next month. I nursed him, but just for a few minutes so he didnt fall asleep on the boob last night. He woke up at least 4 times. Its frustrating.
