My Mood:
Unhappy 1mo postpartum and getting aroused is painful

I had a vaginal delivery without pain meds, had a heavy/fast pushing stage and a moderately sized episiotomy (wanted to tear but baby was in distress so they wanted him out on the next push).

I know it's too soon for sex, and believe me, it is even not on my mind. But the other day my hubby and I kissed really passionately and my vagina began to hurt! Now that we're wanting to be at least sort of intimate again I can't because whenever I get aroused my lady parts start aching and I have to stop. I'm afraid to even enjoy a kiss now.

Has this happened to anyone else? How long until it went away?

I didn't have anything like that, but it sounds like it would be worth a call to your OB/midwife. Childbirth is a lot of work, and can certainly be very hard on our bodies. Hope it clears up soon, mama

My Mood:
It's makes sense that it would ache. I mean, physiologically, when you get aroused your vagina swells with extra blood flow. Any stitches or sore spots would be stretched slightly.

I had something similar in my first trimester, but it was more like cramping. I was so worried I was going to hurt the baby. Anyway, it went away, and my doctor said it was not a problem. Hopefully yours says the same!

you're probably still really bruised and swollen. have you looked with a mirror to see if your vulva and vagina look swollen still? I wouls wait to see if it gets any better and then def bring it up at your 6wk pp visit if it's still an issue. After my first birth I remember that it felt awkward the first few times we were intimate and that I had to relearn how to orgasm again. tmi i know but i think it's all somewhat normal.

Take things slowly! It took me until about 12 + weeks to feel ok (I also had a natural, fast delivery with an episiotomy). Definitely ask about it at your next check up, but keep in mind that different people heal at different rates.

Re: 1mo postpartum and getting aroused is painful

It took over 6 weeks, but where I had stitches it was not comfortable for months afterward. It was a long road to getting back to a "normal" and comfortable sex life. I had an unmedicated vaginal birth with only 3 stitches and an 8lb 5oz baby. I was swollen for a couple weeks after DD arrived. Midwife recommended soaking in the tub with Epsom Salt and that did relieve the swelling but the tenderness was still there.

Dont rush yourself. With my first dd I tore very badly. They put me to sleep to stitch me. It took a good 3 months for me to even walk right. It was probably 5 months before we dtd. Talk to your dr if you think it hurts more then it should but I really think you probably just need more time.

Re: 1mo postpartum and getting aroused is painful

I know exactly what you're talking about! It actually took almost a year for me not to feel that ache when getting aroused (it did get less over time during that year). A friend of mine reported the same thing. I don't think she tore at all, but I tore a lot, had an episiotomy, and had a lot of birth trauma. I figured the ache was normal for my experience, and it did get better by itself.
