Nipple Confusion? Baby won't 'suck', just searches! Newborn

My 4 day old started out just nursing, and did really well. It was really painful, but I've figured out how to hold her better, and I think it's finally starting to not be as bad pain wise, so I'm really excited about that.

She has a slight case of jaundice, so the Ped. had me put her on some soy formula because she needed lots of fluids to get rid of it, and my milk just came in yesterday. She did OK with the bottles, but seriously hated them and hated the formula.

For the past couple days, she has the hardest time latching on sometimes. The 'sometimes' is what puzzles me. Yesterday evening, she would only latch on to one side, and then kept searching and crying/screaming in frustration on the other side. So I would start on the 'good' side, and then switch over. Last night, she nursed off BOTH sides, every hour. Which is SO much better than her going 3-4+ hours in between feedings.

This morning after 3-4 good nursing sessions an hour apart, the 5th one she is back to confusion again. She will suck on her paci (a Soothie, very nipple shaped like), but then won't suck or latch on to the breast. She just searches, rolls her tongue around, and moves her mouth back and forth. She gets frustrated and mad, and then cries/screams.

I have tried putting paci in, having her suck, taking it out and quickly putting breast in. Doesn't work. I also stay calm, and just take her off, wait, and try it again. Nope.

I'm SO upset because nursing was going so well for us last night I thought we could be done with bottles. Finally after a half hour of it not working, I gave her a bottle and she took it.

I don't want to pump and fill bottles. I really, really just want to nurse. She does SO well when she can get it, I just don't understand why she can't figure out how to latch on or start sucking randomly.

Please help!

Look up nipple confusion. Ditch the bottles AND the paci. Put baby to the breast early and often. If you have to supplement, do so by syringe, finger feeding or cup. Don't let baby get to hungry. Offer to nurse, watching for hunger cues, not just crying.

Sorry I don't have time for a nicer/kinder way of putting it, but you sound like you need help ASAP!

Thanks! I was just able to nurse her to sleep, and she nursed for a good 20 minutes. I could tell she was getting a good amount, so that is nice! When she wakes up, I am going to try and nurse on the other side and see how it goes. I would rather comfort nurse for her to go to sleep, than use the paci and have her stop nursing. So we put the bottles and pacis away and we will see how it goes. Just excited she finally nursed. I'm just going to try every hour, like she has been doing.

Babies do need to nurse almost constantly sometimes in the beginning. Also, is it always one side she has more dificulty with? Could be somethign was pushed out of place during birth - or even afterwards....I would try and see a chiropracter who is certificied in pediatrics....they are really gentle, just use their finger tips.

yeah what she said!!

Starting bottles that early can be seriously damaging for the nursing relationship; it's very confusing for them. Glad that you had success later! Keep trying; you won't regret it!
