Help Mama's who BF and pump...Question about hungry baby??

My son is 11 weeks old and I just went back to work. All week long he had bottles during the day and nursed when I returned home. Today was my first day off and time to spend with him. It seemed like he wasnt getting enough to eat. He nursed frequently but fell asleep and has been fussy and hard to console all day. This afternoon he would latch and pull off, over and over again I couldnt figure out what was going on but thought he has to be hungry. I heated 3oz of expressed milk from my freezer supply and he drank it right down. Is he lazy at the breast today? or could my body be having a hard time keeping up w/his needs. What do I do? Advice? I dont want anything to disrupt our nursing relationship, but I must work

Sounds like bottle preference. I would just keep offering the breast and keep pumping if your breasts aren't being adequately softened. He may have something else going on today as well. My guess is he will figure out there's no bottle today and go back to eating normally.

My first daughter did that as a bottle preference. I ended up getting rid of the bottles because I didn't need to use them. But she did understand if she was hungry she would need to give up on the bottle- sometimes at first to relax her when she refused to nurse and was fussing I would let her suck on my finger and then move her over to nurse. My second, now 9 say old daughter has a nursing preference this time. LOL

Could be a bottle prefrence, could also be he is tryng to help increase your supply, or he just missed you! All my LOs nursed A LOT when I was home with them. Either way, the more you can put him to the breast the better :-)

*not saying your supply is low, but, I think mine is always a little less by the weekend (but still plenty for baby) and nursing through the weekend gets it going really well for the next week. Pumping doesn't normally empty breasts as well as nursing.

My LOs at that age always wanted to nurse frequently when with me. They would cuddle right in, relax and fall asleep too soon to empty the breast well. Then, they would have an upset tummy because of too much foremilk. I did my best to talk to them and engage them when I was nursing just to keep them awake. I would move my breast around a bit to encourage them to suck again.

FWIW, drinking a bottle isn't a sign they're hungry. Mine could suck a bottle down even if they just had a good feed with me. They just like to eat!

There is a growth sprout around 12 weeks. My dd nurses on me all night long after my 2 days at work. She gets fussy easy cause she wants more milk but it isnt always there cause she nurses constantly. But remember the more they nurse the more our bodies are told to make more milk.
