Reasons I like formula feeding

I nursed my first two babies with a LOT of trouble, low supply, difficulty getting them to grow, and huge expense between consultants, supplements, pumps, etc. It was emotionally, physically, and fiscally exhausting, and I felt like a failure when it didn't work and I had to give them formula.

With this baby, I started out with formula and I'm really liking it! This is a thread to share the benefits of formula feeding. Share yours!

1. DH can feed the baby! So can DS or DD - they get a kick out of it.
2. I know how much the baby is getting and she's growing (and after two tiny babies who struggled to gain weight exclusively breastfeeding, this is HUGE!)
3. I'm not attached to a pump every few hours
4. I can feed on the go without dirty looks
5. It costs less than breastfeeding (I figured out the cost and a year of formula will be less than all the consultant visits, supplements, pump equipment, etc.)
6. I can be away from the baby more than a few hours without discomfort
7. I'm a MUCH more relaxed mama! I'm not stressing out about how much milk the baby is eating.
8. I can eat what I want without worrying about giving the baby gas.
9. I'm not taking supplements that make me smell like pancakes. (Fenugreek makes you smell like maple!)

How about you?

Pretty much all the same as yours! I also have babies who fail to thrive on my breastmilk, so being able to see how much they eat and watching them grow are high on my list!

Re: Reasons I like formula feeding

Thank you for this! I'm on my third and last baby. I tried breastfeeding with all three and failed. I came very close with the third but, once I built up a supply he was getting very fussy at the breast. I want to pump but, really don't have the time. I have one son in school and two at home. The youngest taking a lot of my time up, I use the very little time I have with my three year old. I have felt very guilty about not breast feeding. Seeing this has helped.

I did nurse...but my supply was always low. I tried several things with little to no help. Ds1 was nursed until 6 mos and ds2 until 4. After that we formula fed. I was thankful to be able to nurse as long as I did!!

My thankful things were much like yours!!

I think it's different for everyone. I've done both with no issues, and I find pros and cons for both. If I were in your situation I would've formula fed after the 1st!

Re: Reasons I like formula feeding

I just had to quit BF'ing. There is just no way to be a daycare provider and breastfeed. I have to have quick feedings, and be able to watch the kids and help them when needed. I LOVED nursing, but we need the income desperately, and I can respect parents that would feel uncomfortable with me nursing in front of their kids. Not to mention I couldn't get much done if I had to BF all day. She LOVED the boob.

The cons for me were:
Took longer to feed
She wouldn't stay under a cover
Uncomfortable when full
Leaked all the time, had to wear pads constantly
Hard to find privacy when out or with family
Baby had gas and constipation from something I was eating

Pros:
Able to feed her faster
Daddy can feed her, and have bonding time
I can make a bottle anytime (don't have to worry about my low supply)
Less stress is always good for everyone
The HUGE pro was being able to watch kids again, an income I couldn't live without.

All in all.. there are pros and cons to both. Would I love to sit around all day as a SAHM and nurse? Yepp. But I do have places to go and things to do, people to see. I want to spend lots of time with my older DS, too, and share my time and attention. I also needed to go back to work, so we could get by financially, so this was huge for me.

Sad I am done BF'ing, but my son survived through it, and is a happy and healthy toddler, and VERY much loving and attached. So that is all that matters to me.
