My oldest son hates being HSed. But we keep him busy with hobbies that would be hard to keep up with if he were in School. He hates school work in general. DH absolutely refuses to let our children go to PS and we can't afford private.

Re: Do any of your children wish they were NOT homeschooled?
I'm still going ahead with my plan to hs both of my girls this fall, even though my older dd is resistant. I am wondering if this is the best idea... (I still haven't let her see the hunger games movie, but I did let her read the books
).

We haven't really gotten to this point yet, because our kids are still little. But honestly, you guys are the parents, you decide what you think is best for you kids. I have to laugh when I hear people say that they want to involve their young children in the schooling decisions. When kids hit high school, that's a different story, but before that, what do kids really know about what is best for themselves or even what they really want? They have little to no perspective when it comes to this stuff. On top of that, they can be really fickle--you might enroll him in public school and then two weeks later he'll change his mind.
I would just try to figure out what it is he feels like he is missing and try to replicate it, keeping in mind that homeschooled kids ARE going to miss out on certain things, just like public schooled kids are going to miss out on most of the things homeschooled kids get to do. Nobody can have everything.

Re: Do any of your children wish they were NOT homeschooled?
My DD has overall positive memories of her time in public schools (preschool- a semester of 2nd grade). She does sometimes wish she could have more time with her school friends.. However at least once or twice a month *I'm getting better* I threaten to just quit teaching her and to just drop her off at the nearest PS so someone else can deal with her..
Its always met with NO!!! I want to HS!!!!

Re: Do any of your children wish they were NOT homeschooled?
We haven't started yet, but at first just my oldest was excited since he is in public school(for one more week!). Now my younger DS is excited and gets upset if you suggest him going next year. But DD is almost 3 and asks to go. If she wants to, we'll try it for a year. But I think she'll be right back home after that.
They love the idea of school half the day, park days and lots of field trips. They will still play with their friends, but not see them everyday. Honestly DS#1 doesn't see most of his friends for play days anyways, only one of then comes to play with him. Most parents don't want to deal with a kid with ADHD. Oh and my DH was homeschooled for a while and by middle school both him and his older brother WANTED to go to ps, and they did. Not everything is a fit all, but what we feel is best for our kids.

Re: Do any of your children wish they were NOT homeschooled?
So far my kids have 0 desire to go to "school" - they are 9, 7 and 4. I know my neighbor's daughter begged for 2 years to go to school after homeschooling from K, and finally went to school in 4th grade. She is loving the social aspect of it- she chose it mainly to get away from her little brother her mom thinks. This has been her second year, and she is doing well. Her test scores were great, although she did struggle getting caught up in math.
I think it depends on personalities... me I was home schooled for 3 months and I LOVED it... we were out of state so my mom had the school send me my work. I wish I would have thought to ask to continue it as I disliked the constant waste of time it was for me. I even crocheted a blanket during Spanish II, because it was so boring and easy. |

Re: Do any of your children wish they were NOT homeschooled?
My older DD's main complaint with homeschooling is that she has a hard time concentrating on her work, and I am not available to help her as needed (both because of 3 younger siblings). She is also very concerned that she will miss out on band (she plays clarinet). She loves fencing, and the high school has a very good team. I don't know, I am so torn. I guess I just have to let her go, and hope that she stays away from all of the negative social influence, and makes good choices...

Re: Do any of your children wish they were NOT homeschooled?
I was going to suggest this too. Up until now the girls have gone to a parochial school and when I told the principal we were probably going to hs, she made arrangements for DD1 to take band and she told me that the girls could take any other class they wanted-we could pick and choose and just pay for the % of time they were there. They can also participate in all athletics. I'm not sure if we'll be able to do band or not (she really wants to). It will really depend on when it is offered as we will probably have issues getting her there (I will have 4 dc kids at the same time and would probably need to find someone to watch them so I could take her. Or, I would have to find someone to drive her there. We'll see.)
