I think if this is one of their first questions, I'd be leery. It makes me wonder what they have to hide.

I think I might tell them that we have a home monitoring system that includes multiple cameras inside the home. Even if I had none, if my nanny thought they were being watched, they'd be less likely to do anything unsavory.

I think they are a cool idea if you have a suspicion. However, I have never felt the need to use one. DD is 5 now, and I just ask her.

I'd definitely use one. (Or several throughout the house, rather)

I was thinking that too? They must be way more common than I realized.

Re: Feelings regarding a "nanny cam" ?

I'm kind of mixed on them. I agree that if you have reservations about your nanny, you should probably find another. But as an over protective, over worrier its really easy to start questioning. I also would like to see what my kids are doing. I actually thought if we every got a nanny we would get one, but we would tell her before (not tell her where it is) and make sure she was ok with being recorded. If she is ok with that then I know her concern is our children. And when I planned on opening a home daycare- I planned on using cameras for everyone's protection.

From the other side I worked in a daycare that recorded the classrooms and it saved me. During nap time I was studying a workbook for school. I dropped it and it landed on the arm of a 2 year old. The workbook was the size and the weight of a magazine. The boy was not sleeping and I said "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to drop that". He immediately started crying "you hit me, you hit me". I was the only teacher in the room and the other kids were asleep. As soon as the next teacher came in, I went straight to the office to make sure it was recorded and to tell my boss what happened. The boy told his parents that a teacher hit him, so that video was my only proof that I didn't hit him.

I've never actually used one BUT we have had nannies and did tell ALL of them that there was a chance we would use one. None of our nannies ever had any concerns about having one in the house with them - that in itself made me feel a little better.

Re: Feelings regarding a "nanny cam" ?

I would use a nanny cam, but only after telling the nanny that I have them. The thought of videotaping someone without their knowledge or permission just seems wrong to me.

Of course, it doesn't matter because I'll never have a nanny. I don't trust anyone else with my kids, and we could never afford one anyway .

It seems to me that telling the nanny a camera is there defeats the purpose...

Maybe. But I wouldn't feel right videotaping someone without their permission or knowledge. I also wouldn't hire someone if I felt like I needed to videotape them to ensure my child's safety. Of course, I don't leave my kids with anyone, so yeah.
