Help please with latching question

My nearly 3 week old daughter was a champion breastfeeder. She did fantastic until I gave her formula for 24 hours for multiple reasons. Although now she will take a bottle, which was one of the reasons, I'm having a hard time getting her to breastfeed again. In fact last night I got about. 2 hours of sleep because I was trying to get her to feed the rest of the time. I tried skin to skin and not forcing it but she is not eating or sleeping which can't be healthy for her. I finally caved when I had to get my 3 yr old ready for school and gave formula. I guess my question is what do I do? Go to a LC? Exclusively pump (although I worry supply could be an issue) or start mixing bm and formula? She is still not at her birthweight (8 oz lighter) and the doc is already worried about that. She has Breastmilk jaundice also so she needs to eat frequently. I just want her to be healthy and dont know what my next step should be.

Re: Help please with latching question

Is there any chance she could have a tongue tie or simply not have been latching as well as you thought? If she's not to her birthweight at 3 weeks and you say that she prefers the bottle, that makes me think she was having a hard time with the breast...do to her latch (could be positioning or tongue tie, or other mechanical issue). have you seen an IBCLC? I would try and do so before trying to EP - that sucks majorly and I only did it for a few weeks.

And don't feel bad about the formula - the most important thing is feeding the baby...and if she isn't eating enough she will just run out of energy and breastfeeding will be even harder for her. In fact now that I say that, have you tried feeding her an ounce or two from the bottle and then offering the breast?

You need to see a LC asap!! If you cant get her to nurse at least 8 times a day you need to pump frequently to maintain your supply. I hope a good LC can help you get her back on the breast asap!

Re: Help please with latching question

I would say don't give up on trying to get her back to breast feeding!! it was hard for me to get LO back on the breast after giving him bottles and formula as well. She just needs to relearn how to nurse again.

Thank you all! I did call the Lc and she said I was doing everything right but like y'all said "don't give up". So far DD is doing better. Still takes longer to latch but at least she is latching. Thank you for your help!
