Re: Vaxxing and kids with needle phobias... Wdyd?

I was that child. Still am that adult -- well I don't hide but I fret for WEEKS if I know I have to get blood...

I wouldn't tell her either. It has to be so hard as a mother.

I would tell her, but not until the night before or morning of the appointment.

Re: Vaxxing and kids with needle phobias... Wdyd?

I'm a recovered needle-phobe! I'm talking valium-popping, hyperventilating on the floor, sobbing like someone was trying to murder me, scared.

Can you call her doctor and get some ELMA cream? Explain, and they should be pretty accommodating. Then, tell her the afternoon before and explain how the cream works. I know that for true needle-phobes, it's not the pain that scares us, it's the needle going in the skin. Once I started getting ELMA cream, I handled vaccines fine, though I still had anxiety. When I was 15 and had to get a booster shot, I forgot the ELMA cream and had to sit in my dad's lap while he hugged me and I sobbed

I feel like my parents handled it well. The most important thing is to never downplay it or tell her she's being extreme. My parents got SO SICK of telling me "I understand your fear, I'll be with you, it'll be just fine", but as an adult I'm so grateful. And, sure enough, I grew out of it. I've donated blood every 8 weeks for the past six years, I've gotten my vaccines, I've gotten ten piercings and four tattoos. The anxiety never truly goes away, but it does become manageable.

I also suggest asking them to prepare the vaccine in a different room and only bring it in right before they inject. No reason to make her wait and watch while they prep the needles. The anticipation is always worse then the actual injection, have them bring it in and tell her to close her eyes (turn her head away, etc) Tell her "ok, 1-2-poke!thats it all done!". That's what we do with the kiddos in my (extended) family.
