Re: A question about your birth experiences
My birth experience was wonderful, but I did a lot of research before, and made sure that I had the right people with me. I had a homebirth with a wonderful midwife, but I live in a community where a scheduled c-section is considered normal.
I don't want to sound anti-c-section or anti-epidural because I'm not. c-section has its place and sometimes it is inevitable and can save the lives of babies and mothers. No one has to be a pain martyr and several people I know loved their epidurals. But I don't like how some doctors will just jump to that solution without considering the mother. It can make a huge postpartum difference. Labor produces lots of natural hormones. After my home birth, I felt like I was high for days. I was relaxed, delighted, floating on a cloud of pure bliss, all thanks to my body's natural production of pitocin and oxytocin and all of the others. I also managed to forget most of labor. While I remember that I was in pain, I can't remember the pain. If I had not been careful to choose the right person to be delivering my baby, I might not have had the wonderful experience that I got.

While my first was not a birth experience I'm happy with and felt bullied, I did actually consent to everything, right down to the ridiculous attempt to break my water when my cervix was still closed. I wouldn't ever recommend him as an OB, but he never violated my rights.
Second experience was awesome. They checked and double checked to make sure I was ok with things, especially when they knew what I had chosen was not in my original plan. The epidural they had three nurses each check with me because I had been pretty insistent that I didn't want it. The anesthetist also made very sure to go over everything, and then took a great deal of time setting me up to be as comfortable as possible while he worked. The only proceedure that I was surprised by was stitching me up, but apparently I was bleeding pretty heavily, so they wanted to get in there. They may have said something too, but things were such chaos right then that I missed it. Sent from my iPod touch using DS Forum

I was given misoprostol (or Cytotec), without my knowledge. I was told I was being given Cervadil, which they did do as well. I even told them I didn't want misoprostol. I found out months later when I requested my chart be sent to me for billing purposes.
In a way, I do feel violated. That was a drug I did not want. I know how dangerous it is, and that it isn't even intended for inductions or use in labor. I had severe uterine cramping for 8 hours, no brea in pain, and now I understand why it was so bad. Other than that though, my hospital was very respectful of my wishes.
