Cereal in purees?

We completely skipped cereals for our girl and have started her on squash puree. She's a little over 6 months. We make our own purees, but I was wondering if I need to add in any rice or oatmeal to help with her iron intake. I asked my pediatrician about it at her 6 month appointment, but the doc was less than helpful. How much should I be adding? We just started her on solids so she's been eating less than an ounce of solids a day right now. TIA!

Re: Cereal in purees?

I never gave my kids the baby cereals and they have all been very healthy.

I added in rice when my puree was too thin. It helped to thicken it! I made my own rice cereal by grinding up organic rice. I don't think there's a set "amount" they need to have though!

Re: Cereal in purees?

I add it in mainly to give the puree a bit more texture. I also figure it can't hurt to get the bit of iron. I EBF so I don't worry too much about this stuff, knowing LO is getting what he needs from the breast milk. I typically just pour some in until its the consistency I want. I wouldn't worry about it too much-but of course, isn't that what we mom's tend to do? GL

Re: Cereal in purees?

I haven't added cereals yet.

Our pediatrician said breastfed babies generally don't need them, unless there are some other issues going on. DS is 8.5 months and healthy.

I ground up some oatmeal and feed it to d with some fruits I figure if apples can stop you up and oatmeal makes you go then having them together should even things out right? . At any rate, she loves them together.

Thanks everyone! That helps way more than my pediatrician! DD is EBF so I wasn't too worried, but I also didn't want to end up with iron issues for her either (I'm a FTM can't you tell??). I'll just mainly use cereal for thickening when necessary and not get too concerned. So far she's doing great with her food which is a plus in and of itself.

They will check the baby iron levels at four month appointment. I am a FTM and had the same concerns. She is doing fine but it do give her the rice cereal.
