I went up to the 3 line with Tide for today's wash, and I added a second extra rinse. Tomorrow night's diaper will be the test.
Maybe I have misjudged the size of my loads? Today I washed 12 pockets with 1 insert each, plus some hemp doublers and of course, the huge stack of hemp and bamboo inserts that go in the bed time diaper (she must be a heavy wetter)...plus wipes and a couple flats or prefolds. I have done a LOT more in terms of regular laundry...much bigger loads...but maybe as far as diapers go these loads are considered "large?" hmmm... |

Re: Talk to me about Tide
It makes sense to me to strip everything and then continue the new wash routine for a bit in order to give the new routine a fair shot, or at least that's what I did when my dipes smelled like a barn and I switched to Tide HE powder. I even figured out that my "smart" HE top-loader dispenses the detergent and bleach in the soak part of the cycle, there wasn't any detergent in the actual wash and the powder plus a splash of bleach is still working really well.

I bleached all my inserts again and now am washing with Tide up to the 3 line. I'm doing 2 speed washes (no detergent ) as rinses after the main wash, but there's a lot more suds than I'm used to seeing. My pail liners come out with suds still on them (I don't care about the pail liners, they're just making the leftover suds easy to see). Should I be concerned about detergent build-up?

So your ammonia smell is only when they wake up in the morning or after the diapers have been washed?

For the most part all detergents have worked similarly for me. I started with CS but found with our FL I had to do so many cycles to rinse it out that I stopped using it. Since then we have replaced our washer with an he/conventional TL. I've tried lots of detergents since then and most have given me success in daytime diapers with varying amounts of success in our night time fitteds. I think once you have a toddler with stronger pee it is ok to have an am diaper that smells like pee or even strong pee as long as it isn't burn your nose hairs out ammonia especially if that diaper has been worn for 12 hours.
I've used natural detergents as well as Tide powder/liquid, gain, all free with oxy, dropps free, and Purex free. Dropps cleaned well but had an awful smell while washing. Unfortunately my 10 week old is sensitive to tide, all, and Purex so I stripped with sports wash and rinsed a ton and now we are using Charlie's with their recommended wash routine with Clorox ultimate care for sanitizing and both baby and toddlers diapers are clean and fresh, no rashes and only pee smell or strong pee in the am. I have nappy fresh to try in place of bleach after I know he won't react to the Charlie's. Not sure if this helps or not. I would use the recommended amount for your load size and add a sanitizer of some kind. |

Our water is "moderately hard" at 65 mg/L....MUCH softer than what I've known my whole life: hard-as-nails New England water. Our well water in our former locale was over 300 mg/L.
Ammonia is only in the night time dipe. Before I bleached it was the burn-your-nose-hairs variety. I'm not using a sanitizer. Should I be? Im a little confused: If a sanitizer is needed, what's the point of detergent? I know detergents don't disinfect, but what's the point if they don't get the diapers or laundry clean? Argh!!! |
