Re: Our neighbors killed an intruder. Gotta question.
We have lots of land, all fenced, chickens, kids, soon cattle and pigs, and will provide good training from the start. I do beileve all dogs do need a good pack leader. Great advise!
![]() Fantastic! Sounds like you're ready for one of those lovable "polar bears"! I only mentioned the fence thing, because a lot of people just don't understand how much it's in a Pyr's nature to patrol borders. Without a clearly defined perimeter they're often likely to get into all kinds of trouble, especially when doing night patrols. Even though we've owned them for years (and know the breed inside out), we still tragically lost one of ours when I forgot to close the front gate one night. He was patrolling along the front edge of our property and got hit by a car. To this day it breaks my heart, and I told myself after it happened that I would always do everything I could to make sure future Pyr owners understand how important it is that their Pyrs are contained within a sturdy fence at all times. It's essential for their own safety. You might already have it, but just in case you don't, LIVESTOCK PROTECTION DOGS by Dawydiak and Sims is an absolutely fantastic book to invest in. You'll go back to it over and over again as you're training and working with your new LGD. You and your family must be so excited about getting your new dog! You need to post pics once you get him/her!

Re: Our neighbors killed an intruder. Gotta question.
Thanks for shareing that story.
I'm very sorry for your loss! We are excited. We have wanted one for a long time now. We finally have the proper enviroment for one. We ahve seen several free to good home but have past them up. I think it will be best for us to get a pup to train from the get go, kwim. I don't want to obtain who know how many issues that will need reversing. I know that doesn't sound nice of me. I just have to think of the boys first. I know first hand how not properly training a large dog can end in devestation. I just refuse to take that chance. Not looking for a reg dog with papers. Just a full blood so we have a better chance of getting one with all the great traits they have. It may take a while to find the perfect match, but we are rearing to go! Not looking forward to the puppy years, lol. That's just how it goes when you get a put and not an older dog. I just couldn't trust someone eleses word when it comes to the training. Lots of people will just say they're great with kids or livestock just to get rid of a dog. Sad really. I hate to see dogs change hands like cash. We provide life homes for our animals. That will include our meat animals. May sound odd, I just believe animals are a gift from God and should live the best life they can. Even if being raised for food. I really appriceate the info hun!!! I will post pics when we find one.

Re: Our neighbors killed an intruder. Gotta question.
I'm not going to enter a gun debate. As soon as we got pregnant, we got guns. I have guns BECAUSE I have kids.
That said, that's what we have. We do keep the doors locked, we have an alarm system that stays on all day, home or not, and we have guns and ammo. Oh, I also have knives and an aluminum baseball bat

Re: Our neighbors killed an intruder. Gotta question.
Oh Sarah thats so scary!!! We have been back and forth on getting a dog. Being from the city I cannot imagine leaving my dog outside, but Brady cannot imagine a dog in the house. I guess we might need to figure it out. Brady has no fear, being from the country, nothing bad has happened in his town. But I'm from the city and jump at every little sound. We are on 1,200 acres, so obviously no fence will work for us either.

Re: Our neighbors killed an intruder. Gotta question.
The best protection is to have all 3 sarahannecloud9
and know how to use them! A house alarm that is hooked up to a monitoring station is also a great idea. Weapons should be a last resort. Dogs are a great early notification that something is wrong. Most local police depts. will come out a do a free security check of your home with you and dh. They will point out flimsy locks and other places that you can improve. Having a gun in the home does equal a ton of responsibility! Let children (especially teens, college age that are away and such) to NEVER attempt to sneak in or out of your home!! This is how many family members are shot and killed by another family member. It is never a good idea to surprise someone with a gun!! Short of that, keep them locked up. When they are not locked up keep them on you. If you are wearing it in a holster (hand guns) kids can find them and use them. Practice, practice and practice some more. Take classes! NRA sponsored classes are offered just about everywhere. Learn how to be confident with your weapon and know how to be safe with it. Also ask what kind of ammo (bullets) they suggest for home defense. You don't want the bullet going through your walls and in to the house next door and killing or hurting someone else. Just enough to hit the bad guy and stop is best. Although your neighbors have had a terrible day, it is a great time to have these discussions with your dh, kids and other family members. Making a plan just like you do in case of a fire is a great way to start. It is all about safety and making it automatic for the kids so they will do it the way they learned if the time comes. Being a woman does put us at risk, but you can put the odds back in your favor. I am currently awaiting my cc in the mail.

Re: Our neighbors killed an intruder. Gotta question.
I usually keep my mouth closed on the issue, but both dh and I have our CCWs and we keep two loaded guns in a gun safe up high in our closet. It is one of those finger lock safes. I hope to never have to use it, but I will protect my family. My dh also works midnights, so I am home alone with my girls. In addition, we always keep our garage closed, first floor windows closed when we are not home or sleeping, and we have our backyard fenced, and we keep that locked. We don't have anything expensive in our house, so if we were robbed and I was home, I am assuming the robbers are going to kill me and my family. In addition, my dh carries one on him all the time when we are out. He used to work as a Security Officer and has combat training, the same as police officers. He has also had extensive fire arm training. He hopes to never have to use it.
But for the OP, I think it is weird that anyone would advertise gold/money in their front yard like that. Scary. I wouldn't even advertise a new baby at my house, because I have heard crazy scary stories on the news about people stealing them.
