Oy, toddlers choosing own clothes
We seem to have gone through all sorts of creativity with this. I love cute kids clothes, and DD has quite a few
. But the way she puts them together is certainly interesting- we have gone through layering type styles- like 2 shirts at once since she likes both and if one is good, why not two- to matching solid with solid, and now instead of matching solids she is matching one color in her prints to one color in a different print- quite an interesting look. Hannas fit my girl best, so you can imagine what those prints look like together.

My daughter wore a Pink Tu Tu, and red firemen boots over every outfit for over a year.

Re: Oy, toddlers choosing own clothes
When I see little kids dresses all crazy... my first thought is always that they picked them out. I think it is cute! I can't wait till my dd starts "picking". (DS wore mostly jeans & t-shirts when he was little so he never made any crazy combos.)

Re: Oy, toddlers choosing own clothes
DD2 did this as well, although now she's 10 and hasn't outgrown it....Yesterday she had on pink sweatpant capris, a pink t-shirt with the colorful word "love" on it, orange ankle socks and her red flat dress shoes. Oye vey. I made her change her shoes and take the socks off when we went to run errands last night

Re: Oy, toddlers choosing own clothes
I love it. The other day, DS (almost 2) went to target in a pink diaper and ONE rainboot. Oh, and when we got inside, he wore my sunglasses, lol. When my older kids were little, we would have an assortment of boys with cat ears (along with drawn whiskers on their face), hooded towels (as capes) and butterfly wings...people would always tell them it wasn't halloween and that was the funny thing, bc we didn't celebrate halloween back then so the kids were like, "huh?"

Re: Oy, toddlers choosing own clothes
Dd1 likes mismatched socks. No amount of explaning on my part helps her understand that not EVERY sock can be mismatched together. (her grandma buys her little mismatched socks). But she loves her socks and at 7 it's still cute. Dd1 has always let me pick her clothes, she still would rather I pick them thanher. So only socks are crazy with her.
Dd2 has had many an interesting clothing choice. She insists on picking every part of her outfit. None of it usually goes together. The biggest issue with her is getting her to let me have some input if we're doing pictures or something like that. |

DS1 is into clothes that are too big. Right now, he's wearing a Rainbow Bright t-shirt that was mine in middle school that he found at my mom's. We have a few shirts we picked up that are too big for him but we loved too much to pass up, and he is constantly along to wear them. I often wonder what people think when my 2 year old waltzes through the store in a youth small....

Re: Oy, toddlers choosing own clothes
I have always let my kids choose their clothes, only enforcing weather-appropriateness when needed. My oldest (5) is color blind, so his combos are always interesting. In the last year or so, he had been more into matching - a shirt with a yellow stripe "matches" pants with a yellow stripe, etc, regardless of what the rest of the article looks like. Super cool.
My youngest (2) is a riot, too - usually things are at least backwards or inside out, if not BOTH. He put on a shirt correctly today and said, "oh not, its backwards!" even though it wasn't, but he has only ever worn that shirt backwards, hence the confusion. Thankfully we only have a few pairs of regular undies and all the rest are boxer briefs - when he wears his regular briefs backwards it just looks... Painful.
