Re: Staph Down There while pregnant??

I contracted a staph infection in my urinary system while expecting LO1. That is actually how we found out. I thought I had a regular old uti and went to the PCP. They tested for white cells and pregancy. I got a BFP in the office and when the cultures came back they were very concerned. I ended up in the hossy and had to see an infectious disease specialist.

Did he say the location of the staph? Many people are colonized with staph and it doesn't cause any illness. In the hospital, we test for colonization in the nares, but I have never heard of an OB doing this? Maybe they found it in the urine? However, I would think if it was in the urine, you would be having symptoms.

Yes, it is contagious, but it only causes illness under certain conditions and it seems like your immune system is keeping it at bay. Staph is all over, and can cause a serious infection if introduced into the wrong place at the wrong time. I wouldn't worry about showering with your little one, but that's me...other's might disagree. I would talk to your doc about the specifics and see if there is anything you can take to reduce/eliminate the bacteria. I wouldn't want to be pregnant with staph in the vag....simply because if your resistance is reduced for some reason, it *may* cause problems. Your OB may tell you not to worry about it when you ask??

Re: Staph Down There while pregnant??

I'd call your doctor to clarify what s/he meant. But I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Most people have staph colonized on their skin and and it has no harmful effect. There are lots of kinds of staph. People can get staph infections (a boil) which is like a large really painful zit. You would know there was something wrong. Sometimes staff can be the "bad" kind (MRSA) which is hard to treat/get rid of.

If you don't have an active infection, there isn't much I would worry about. Just continue with normal hygiene stuff - hand washing.

Are you sure it wasn't 'strep'?
