Is shipping cost based on weight or distance or both?

So, I'm posting a bunch of stuff on ebay and I'm using a postal scale to see how much the shipping will cost. It doesn't seem to change shipping based on the address I put in or the package dimensions. For some reason I always thought shipping was calculated based on a combination of how far I was sending something, the weight and size of the package. Is it only based on weight or am I doing something wrong?

For ease of conversation, I am only shipping in the US, so I don't need to know about shipping internationally.

if its under 13 oz, it's cheapest for first class mail. First class mail is the same price anywhere in the US. The highest is 3 something. Over 13 oz it is based on weight and zip. HTH

Last I checked, USPS has zones, so while Florida and Michigan are as far as Michigan and Texas, they would be in 2 different zones, but cost the same amount. That's always been my understanding.

I've only noticed shipping cost differences in Priority packages. Since they have a time component, it would cost more to send the same weight package from Florida to Washington than it would from Florida to Georgia.

First class, however, just gets there when it gets there, and IME is just based on weight.
