Under One Just For Fun???
Where does this idea come from? I thought it was BLW, but I can't find anything on their site... Where can I go to read up on the "under one just for fun" idea?

Re: Under One Just For Fun???
I think it's just a general rule people go by. Basically saying don't stress about starting solids or feeding solids to baby in general. That under a year it's not actually needed and just for fun, for trying new things, for exploring what they like, etc.

Re: Under One Just For Fun???
I've personally not seen it in anything (but I have yet to look it up in great detail)
I've heard it ALOT though from other moms I know.. Basically the food babies have before age one is "just for fun" Meaning that it's not to be relied on as their only source for nutrients, etc (so they should still be breast/formula fed) but use it also to explore new tastes, textures etc.. I do think it stems from BLW though.. |

also agree it not suppose to be relied on as the only source and if you delay it, it wont cause any harm

I read that in The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, when it discusses breast milk being the main food source for the first year.

Re: Under One Just For Fun???
Well, never seen anything published about it, but I've seen it done the opposite way. Know someone who wasn't producing enough milk and didn't want to supplement with formula so upped the solids and by 10 months old the babies were almost exclusively fed solids while getting no more "milk" either from her or cows milk/. They BF twice a day and were given a bottle of cows milk once or twice a day. If they got hungry during the day they were offered solids if they didn't want them tough. It was kind of sad to me because they were being fed solids as their main source of food very young and they didn't seem to react super well to it. So when I first heard under 1 just for fun concept it really hit home with me. Now my son LOVED solids and ate everything and anything by a year old, but his main source of nutrition was still liquid. It doesn't mean don't expose them I think it means don't push them into it.

Re: Under One Just For Fun???
I think this is one of the main places, but it is also just common sense. Anytime after six months is fine, but you don't need to rush them. My son is 10 months, is still doesn't really eat enough solids to talk about. He tastes things, and gnaws on (non-gluten, soy free) crackers.

Re: Under One Just For Fun???
Yea my DD didn't eat a lot of solids until around age 1.
She just wasn't ready and has just started eating more solids at 14 months and she's just fine. |
