Saxon Phonics and Math

Anyone use either Saxon Math or Saxon Phonics? What did you like or not like about them? I can't decide between Saxon Phonics or Sing Spell Read & Write. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

We used Saxon Phonics K. It was very structured/school like. But, of course, you can add anything you like to it. My ds did well with it. I haven't ever used Sing, Spell, Read, Write, but I know some hs who really like it.

Re: Saxon Phonics and Math

Hi, I am new to this board but I thought i would give you some imput. My daughter is 5 and we bought 1st grade saxon math. I am so intimidated by all the material that I haven't even started it with her. It was $80, imo, pretty expensive. I think once we get going it will be good, it is just so much work. According to them, there is 4 seperate parts you have to do 4 times a week. We are going to start it soon. My daughter really isn't suppose to be in kindergarten till this year, but we started school on her 5th bday in October. I have spoken to many people and everyone who has done Saxon Math has loved it. But just like me, they all said it was extremely overwhelming at 1st. HTH's.

FWIW, I was taught to read using SSR&W like 20 years ago. It works!

We used Saxon math from 4th grade on.

It's what I'll use with my DD.

Re: Saxon Phonics and Math

Haven't used Saxon phonics, but used the math from K-7th. Math is very structured up to 3rd. It depends on what your kids respond to and what you are comfortable with. Saxon has been great for us because it gave us a rhythm. My ds decided this last year that Saxon is driving him crazy and does not want to do it anymore. I ordered Oak Meadow instead, and, can I say rudimentary? Well, that is what he wanted. Something no brainer. That's alright. Who can't use a brush up on basic fact practice? Maybe next year he find the motivation.

We grew up using Abeka, and then switched to Saxon Math for one year and I remember not liking it. I think we just got used to the way Abeka's math program worked.

I hated Saxon, too, because I actually had to learn. There was no getting around it.

Re: Saxon Phonics and Math

I taught in our public. elem. schoolf or 3 years using Saxon phonics and math. Saxon phonics is like learning a foreign language... I'm not too keen on all of the rules (it seemed like we spent FAR too much time learning rules rather than learning to read.. KWIM?) but they really do work. I taught grades 1-3.
