Re: BLW When Parents Don't Eat Healthy
I will tell you that in our experience, BLW was not the way to go with DD1 with the way we ate. She would have gotten much more nutritious food if we had done purees. I'm just being honest. I think it attributes to her poor eating habits now. DD2 is getting homemade purees currently and I feel much better about it.

Our eating also got healthier once we started BLW, but sometimes if I make a really spicy meal or something like soup that he doesn't like then he gets the old standy-homemade grilled cheese!

Re: BLW When Parents Don't Eat Healthy
We run into problems with spiciness too. I've started keeping things mild and then adding hot sauce at the table! My approach to BLW (with my older daughter so far, the babe is just 5 months) was to select out a few key parts of my dinner but not the fully sauced or assembled meal. Cut up ravioli without the arribiata sauce, for example. I love spicy food so figuring out that aspect of things has been a challenge. Not the same challenge as unhealthy food but a challenge nonetheless.

Re: BLW When Parents Don't Eat Healthy
I agree...it is hard to eat health sometimes on a budget. I have found it you make seperate food for your baby they will expect it now I'm trying to reverse it with my 2 year old :-\

Re: BLW When Parents Don't Eat Healthy
When my husband and I got married and were thinking about having children, we educated ourselves on different types of food and ways to be healthier, and now that we have a 3 month old son; we are vegetarian, eat mostly organic, belong to an organic csa, etc. This was long in coming (over a year), and we were both raised eating processed food/meat/cow's milk/all that stuff. We also both take multi-vitamins daily (mine are prenatal because I'm breastfeeding). In short, we model the behavior that we want to see in our son when he gets old enough to participate, and we figured that if we started now it would be natural when the time came. Of course, we're not perfect and do still eat "bad food" sometimes (I love to bake!), but we try to be healthy for our son's sake. My advice is to start slow and stop buying anything that you consider to be junk food. It is a lot easier to reach for fruit when there are no other sweets in the house, and you will eat baked goods less often when you have to make them yourself from scratch. Good luck!

Re: BLW When Parents Don't Eat Healthy
I agree with starting slow. Also, try thinking of foods you enjoy and finding the recipes of healthier versions for them so you can make them from scratch yourself. Maybe cooking with you husband can be a way to spend some quality time

Re: BLW When Parents Don't Eat Healthy
I think that eating healthy is important for both you and your kids. BLW or not, eventually your DD is going to want to be eating what you have on your plate. My husband and I have definitely started eating better now that my DS eats with us. We just save the occasionally junk food and sweets for after he's in bed :-)
