Kiddie Pools...

we live in the south and let's just say it's HOT and there are tons of mosquitos. Our little girl has welts if she gets bit - so sad. Well, she loves the water and we got her a blow up kiddie pool - we can fit too! She loves it, but we don't want to leave it up too long for fear of increasing the mosquito population. Anyone know if you can add bleach or something to the water? Won't it evaporate out after a day or so? Is it safe for us to be soaking in the bleach water? Any other ideas on killing skeeters? and if anyone has a good baby safe spray/cream to suggest (diy with recipe or for sale) for repelling the buggers! thanks

Re: Kiddie Pools...

I just use a bucket to empty the pool out and spread the water over my lawn. That way the pool is clean each time (esp with kids in swim diapers, nasty), my lawn gets watered, and I get a mini workout from scooping & dumping so much water I also hate the yellow rings kiddie pools will cause in the grass when left out, and if you leave them out long enough the smell of the rotting grass underneath is HORRIBLE! Its like a dead animal smell ..and then the dogs like to roll in it, double yuck.

Ha, I empty mine within 3 days using the bucket method and I wipe it down every time. We keep a tarp over it at night.

We empty ours after every use too. There's always bugs, leaves, grass, etc in the water anyway.

We always eptied after every use. for all the above mentioned reasons. Just one afternoon of play and there is usually a ton of grass, dirt, rocks ect in the pool.

We empty ours after every use. We turn it into a game. Ds gets to fill up buckets and water my plants

We are bad about leaving ours. DH empties it every 3 days or so unless we use it the next day then I empty it and fill it up with new water. I step on the side and let the water flow out until it's light enough to lift.

If you are comfortable from a safety standpoint, cover it with a tarp. You can add a small amount of bleach to it. I would empty it once a week any way.

Re: Kiddie Pools...

When dd1 was little we used one of those turtle sandboxes as a pool - we put the cover on it to keep bugs out. I'd put a cap of bleach in it and empty every week to week and 1/2. Dd would be out swimming in it every day so it just didn't make sense to empty it daily. But if we weren't going to use it for a couple of days we'd empty it and let it dry out good. A capful of bleach seemed to be all the pool needed to keep it from getting gross.
