Re: Cherries - the fruit kind!!!

this is good info. i was just at the store today looking at unpitted cherries lamenting that they'd be a pain to give my kiddo.

I guess maybe I need to buy a pitter

Re: Cherries - the fruit kind!!!

I give my two year old whole cherries and she spits out the pit. It's less work for me, plus she has lots of oral motor issues and likes the extra chewing. She's never choked on one, I don't know if she's swallowed any or not. By two years old, I don't cut anything anymore.

This. They like to sick on the pits and spit them out.

Re: Cherries - the fruit kind!!!

I have this bad boy http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS.../chrisficti-20

It is awesome. It pits 4 at a time, so it's quick and easy. I pitted 15 pounds of cherries last summer after we went to the u-pick farm and it only took me 25 minutes with this.

When cherries are cheap like they are I buy a LOT and pit them with a cherry pitter, spread them on the cooling rack and freeze them. When they are frozen, I pack them into bags and we have pitted cherries all winter. Seems obvious, but some of the best things in life are simple. A cherry pitter is totally worth it!

Re: Cherries - the fruit kind!!!

Someone posted this on a fb link yesterday. It looks like a quick and easy way to pit them. I will definately try it the next time I buy some. http://food52.com/blog/3795_hacking_a_cherry_pitter

I give them whole to my 2 year old (almost 3) and just tell him to be careful and not eat the pits. He just spits the pits out.
