Meyer Production Pack= Good deal?

Hey all,

Help me decide, I was thinking about getting the Meyers Production Pack for the 7/9 hatch. But I don't need 25+ chicks, was thinking about selling the chicks that a don't keep. Do you think it's too late in the season to order babies? I wonder if I will get stuck with a bunch. I was just thinking that the free shipping might be worth it. Any ideas?

Re: Meyer Production Pack= Good deal?

I think with the heat wave it might be a bad idea. I wouldn't want to get a box of dead babies. It's really hard this time of the year to keep babies at a even temp too, inside or out. Inside- air conditioner outside- hell. Plus it's highly likely you'll get mostly production reds and austrolorps this time of the year, given that you specifically chose such a fancy breed (BLRW) to begin with would you be ok with "boring" birds and the problems that come with birds bred for high production only, frequent internal laying and such? Shipping to me is worth it to get exactly the birds I want at the right time. Don't get suckered into a deal that isn't worth it if you wind up feeding them for weeks then can't get rid of them. If you really want more birds now, I'd see if someone local to you has some. Seems this year has brought the broody out in a lot of friend's hens. I ordered my last batch from healthy chicks and more, the cost per bird is a little higher but they have a 10 bird minimum and you don't pay shipping. I would still try to request a ship date for a week or two out to try to avoid this nasty heat were I you.
