Cake recipes good for shaping?
Does anyone know a good recipe for a cake that will be firm/sturdy enough to be cut into a shape, while still tasting good? The flavor doesn't really matter, as long as it will taste good, it is for a birthday cake. I've heard that pound cakes work well, but I don't have a good recipe, and a lot of the recipes I've found either say to use a bundt pan or a loaf pan, and I need it to be big enough to cut 4 hearts and also make 3-4 cupcakes with, so I can assemble a butterfly. I might need to make 2 cakes b/c I don't know for sure yet the size of the hearts I'm going to do. Either way, I don't know if the pound cakes that call for the bundt or loaf pans would turn out fine in a larger pan, and I don't want to mess it up and be stuck without a cake! If anyone shares a recipe, please include the size of cake that your recipe makes so that I know if I need to double it or anything. Also, I don't have shaped pans...I know that would make it much easier, but I don't know where to find them by the time I need them, and don't want to spend a ton on them, either. Thanks so much for any help!!!

Re: Cake recipes good for shaping?
put the unfrosted cake in the freezer either for a few hours or overnight. Frozen cakes cut a lot better without crumbling. I always do a practice cake before I need a real one- so I know I can do it before its down to crunch time. No body seems to mind having a cake for no reason.

Re: Cake recipes good for shaping?
Yes...I've read that freezing helps with shaping, can either of you (or anyone else) tell me specifics on that? Such as, how to wrap for in the freezer, how to thaw, etc? I've read conflicting things - one article I read said to wrap in plastic, and to remove the plastic before thawing so it doesn't get soggy. Another thing said the complete opposite. Would it work to freeze, take it out to cut, and keep it out while it thaws? We have to drive 2 hours away, and have the party the next day, so it would be much easier to make and cut the cake before, and then just frost/decorate when we get there. But, I can make anything work...just need some guidance! I just don't want it to have a freezer taste, or to get too soggy afterwards. Thanks!
