Re: Hand held "gaming system" for kids

My kids (7 & 4) have Fisher Price iXL systems. They have writing & reading as part of the games. What I really like about them is that the games get loaded onto the system itself, so you don't have to worry about losing those tiny cartridges like the Leapster or DS.

Re: Hand held "gaming system" for kids

My kids each have a DSlite and tablet and love both. The Ds's are the sturdiest and get the most use though I think the tablets have the largest range of application. If you want cheap and just a gaming system a DS is probably the way to go. My boys just wouldn't go for any of the Leapfrog systems. Actually both of the boys had a blast with the old Gameboy advance before they grew into the DS but four is plenty old enough for a DS. If you are not opposed to used you can get good deals on DS on Craigslist.

Re: Hand held "gaming system" for kids

We have a leapster, mobigo, and vreader...kids are 6 and 4, and they play with all of them. ODS is starting to get bored with some of the games because they're too easy for him...so in terms of growing with them, I'd go for a Nintendo DS or DSi or something along the lines of that (I've heard not so great stuff about the 3D one as well though). ODS is getting a DS or DSi for Christmas this year.

The old DS is also the original and chunkier than some of the other versions. It can be hard to buy accessories for. I have actually had a hard time lately buying accessories for the Dslites as they are now an older version. They are also thinner than the old DS. The DSXL and DSi were the newer versions. I think the DSi can also take pictures, the DS and DSlite cannot. The 3ds is the newest version and can play all of the old DS games but I'm not sure if it can play the game boy advance games like the DSlite can. I refused to buy it for my boys because I will not allow them to have a game system with a 3d feature, it is bad for their eyes. Unfortunately there are some games that are only available in 3d now, but there are still plenty of great games for the DS and as far as I know all DS games are compatible with all of the DS systems.

My 5.5 and 3 yo ds' each have a ds. I got them used off eBay and spent $100 for both of them. They don't even realize they are used and the price tag was more of what I wanted to spend. There are educational games and the fun character games they like to play so we all win

Leapsters are about $40. LeapPads are about $100. Different things.

I'd probably get the Leapsters myself. My DD is 6 and not reading and struggles with quite a few of the DS games. She still plays her Leapster a lot and gets a lot of use of it.

Or wait and see what the Leapster GS is when more info is out.
