I don't think a pediatrician's place is to tell you how to raise your children. Those are parenting decisions, not medical decisions.

I absolutely want a doctor who is an expert in pediatrics. I don't care how they feel about cloth diapers or co-sleeping, etc. I do expect a pediatrician to listen to me when I tell them my experience about my children's medical condition. But, after they hear my description of the signs and symptoms, etc., then I expect a physician who is capable of providing the best possible medical advice. If they are unable to resolve the issue, then I want someone who has the connections to get us the referral and in for a quick appointment with a specialist.

I think that for a lot of people there is blurring between what is medical and what is parenting.

We didn't interview peds/ We fell into our first ped. and she was a resident and was wonderful. Because she was a resident, we always got 2-3 opinions and always got a head ped. if there was an issue (and there were). She was amazing and took a lot of time to explain everything, answer questions and do a great job. She then recommended our next ped, and one of them was the working with us on shot issue as well as other issues, and its been a non-issue. The new one is really easy to talk to, very comfortable to deal with and never has an issue if I just waste a visit being that worrier mom.

She's fine with our choices and will "educate" us but never pushes. She even worked with us before we got on her panel and never cared. Don't underestimate personality/good fit.

I interview 3 doc before choosing our doc. He and his stuffs r all very caring. He once sat in the room to answer our silly questions for 45 minutes(we r first time parents), he is up to date with what's out there in the pediatric world. We have nursing line to call after hours and on weekends. They will page doc(2 doc join office) and one of them will call u right back. The office will call us first thing Next morning to follow up

. We r bless to find our doc and his stuffs. We have lactation consultants at hospital for free and I click with one of them....visit her a few times at the beginning and revisit her at 6 months so she can c what a good breast feed chubby baby we have thanks to her. One of the doc I interview was very busy, u r in and out of office in 5 minutes, plus the wait time(I went to my friends kids appointments), my friend love the fast appointment but I love the detail appointments with my doc.

She sounds like the OB/Gyn that I had with my first pregnancy. She didn't listen to my concerns because she was "very busy", knew everything there was to know about pregnancy even though I am the expert on my own body (and YOU are the expert on your child), and as a result, she nearly killed my son and I. Run, run fast and hard, find a pedi who respects you, and don't look back.

I WAS always going to vac on time.... Then my son had a really bad reaction to the pertussis vaccine so now I delay for all my kids. What if that happens? Would you still be encouraged to vac on time? I loved it that my ped. discussed with me it was probably the vaccine causing his 107 degree temps and lets hold off until he is older and bigger for the other ones. Think about your ped'd attitude if something unexpected happens.

I also hATE it when docs make sure I know how busy they are. Everyone's busy - they choose this job so deal with it.

Just things to think about.

Loved our first but he was 45 minutes away. Loved our 2nd until she joined a practice and stopped interacting with out child, sat behind a laptop and asked questions. Like our 3rd...trained under the 1st so similar personality but will tell it like it is...and doesn't like that we delay but is okay with it because we still vax.

Bedside manner is big for me so I would NOT stay with someone I didn't like and feel comfortable with. I would never use a ped that doesn't give a parent the choice to come up with a vax schedule they feel comfortable with, either.

I would not choose that doctor. Her saying how busy she is makes me feel like she wouldn't have time for my child. Esp if you suspect further medical problems, you will need a doctor with time for you & your child. Plus other medical issues could lead to a need for a revised vax schedule which she's stated is not okay. It sounds like she has her way or no way. I'd find someone else.

We took the girls to a pedi and her bedside manner was horrible. Didn't smile, made the girls uncomfortable with her lack of communication and friendliness (which is huge, DD1 hates people and sobs during every appt, even with our nice pedi in ohio). She told us to completely vax DD2 or she'd die and was completely rude about it. This was after I told her she couldn't look at DD1s girly parts. As we were leaving DH said I needed to find a new pedi (we moved and were looking for one).

So when DS was born I met the on call pedi and I loved her the second she walked into our room. She was smiling and laughing. We talked for awhile like she wasn't rushed, at the appts with the kids she takes her time, she made DD1 laugh, smike and talk and this was the first time DD1 had not cried at an appt. She answered all of dhs questions about vax'ing, she's very honest but not in a mean or condescending way, she didn't ask or even look at the girls girly bits, didn't open up DS's diaper to have a peek.

Having a pedi that we can trust, not feel judged, and have us stand behind whatever we decide as a family to do is very important. We don't want our kids to grow up hating drs because they had a crappy pedi.
