Re: MFW or HOD?

I didn't end up going. Now I kind of wish I had, because I thought I was decided...but I'm still not...

I'm still trying to decide if I am going to hs my 8th grader or let her go to ps. I think I decided, based on reviews, that I don't want to do ECC, so if I do hs her I am pretty much sure on her curriculum: HOD MTMM.
I just need to decide on my younger DDs curric...MFW Adventures, which looks so fun, and everyone says they just loved...or HOD Beyond. Again, I know I don't want to do ECC, so I would do HOD Bigger for 3rd.

I would do HOD for both in that situation.

Re: MFW or HOD?

This was a question I was trying to answer. MFW or Sonlight? I put it ALL away for a week and prayed about it. I have a peace about using MFW. I am so excited to start this adventure!!

Re: MFW or HOD?

It's hard, b/c what works for one family may not work for another. We've used MFW since the beginning (going on our 5th year hsing). I've looked at HOD, but for various reasons always walked away from it.

Last year we went to our state convention and I went into really wondering if we'd stick with MFW. I was looking at HOD at the convention too...I knew with-in an hour of going between both curriculums that HOD was NOT for us and to stick with MFW.

I know that's not helpful, just our experience. I would really pray about it. I think you said your convention was May 4th? So, I'm sure you've looked at both curriculums by now (I haven't read through this thread).

GL to you!

We didn't end up going to the convention, and only MFW was there, not hod. Do you mind telling the reasons you always chose to walk away from hod and to stay with MFW? Is there anything you can list a as a pro or con for MFW?

Re: MFW or HOD?

Reading over all of your reasons, I would go with HOD for both. To me, it only makes sense to use one if you're going with a "boxed set." I looked at HOD for DD for 1st grade but ultimately decided to do an ecclectic mix of things for the three kids instead. I could get all the things I wanted that way for way less.

Re: MFW or HOD?

I was asking myself and everybody I could that same question for over a year! Last year I ended up sticking with MFW (we've done K, 1st, & Adv) and we did ECC. It was meant for my 8 (now 9) and 7 year-old daughters but it was a bust. I was so excited to combine them and to do the missions study, but MFW just quit working for us. I just couldn't make it work no matter what we tried. There was very little we loved about that year. I found that combining isn't always better. It might have worked a little better if I was able to focus on just the older child with it, but in the process, my 7 year-old was lost. She can't sit and listen like her older sister.

Another problem we found at this time trying to combine the older two, was that my 5 year-old daughter then was having trouble finding something to do - alone.

We switched over to HOD a few months ago and may never look back! We love it.

I am using Little Hearts for my 5 (will be 6 in Oct) year-old, Beyond for my 7 (will be 8 in Nov) year -old, and Bigger for my 9 year-old.

I love it. My oldest can do some work independently and next year even more, so it isn't really that bad using several guides. I love the one-on-one time. I love their daily grid guide. I love the huge focus on character, Bible, time with the Lord, etc. Just seems to be easier for me to use and easier for the children to follow and learn. My girls all love to read and this is a great program for that! They LOVE the book choices and so do I! That was something that I always had a hard time with MFW about. Especially as I looked ahead, it seemed so many book choices might not have been right for us.

Keep praying! God will lead you.

Re: MFW or HOD?

I purchased MFW ECC for my DDs to do this coming school year (2nd and 8th grade). I have my fingers crossed that it will be right for us and that, at the very least, we will have a productive year and learn something without much frustration! The following year my older dd will move onto MFW AHL for 9th grade, and I was planning to do ADV at that point for my younger DD and MFWK for my ds.

It may work well for you . I don't think it's a bad program, but rather it was just way wrong for us and for me and my style and abilities.

Have fun! Not sure if you've seen this blog, but it may prove to be really really helpful to you for ideas and encouragement.
