I would tell the dad, most definitely. And I would also tell the kid that it's not a word to be tossed about lightly, and that comedians and rappers do it for the shock value. If the kid persisted in using the word in my presence, I would then give him a lengthy lesson on the historical context of the n-word, beginning from the slave trade, through Emancipation and the Civil Rights movement.
