coconut milk?
This is probably a silly question but i've seen coconut milk mentioned as an alternative to dairy. My girls have dairy and soy intolerances so I've always done almond for me while nursing. My second is getting close to weaning and if I'd like to give her an occasional cup I saw an idea I liked of mixing the two, coconut and almond. Coconut for fat and almond for protein. My question is what kind of coconut milk. There is some in.the cooking section in a can, more expensive, thicker, more fat. Then there is the type in the milk and shelf stable section, cheaper, thinner, less fat. Which do you use? Is the one with the milk the same only watered down?

Re: coconut milk?
My little guy is intolerant to dairy and soy, so we use mainly almond when he wants a cup (because that is what I prefer to drink). I think that if you lo is a good eater then you are fine with going with the coco milk from the dairy section (in a carton). But, if she is needing the cal. And fat then you could supplement with something like coco Lopez... I do know they have organic versions and I actually have a "recipe" to make your own.

Re: coconut milk?
In the dairy aisle (especially at Target) there are brands like So Delicious and Silk in half gallon cartons that have a coconut version. Silk is really good because it has a lot of added calcium. I get the Trader Joe's version at the moment. The canned version is good for making pudding though! I use a quarter canned coconut milk and then the rest is regular.

My youngest could definitely use the calories, she has been gaining very little weighr the past few months as she has dropped some nursings. She is down below the 10th percentile for weight where she had been 25th and is in the 65th for height. I may think about getting the thicker stuff and water it down with the almond milk as a decent calorie supplementer since she cant do ensure or anything. I just wanted to make sure it wasnt like I was feeding her shortening or something.

Re: coconut milk?
Just check the nutritional information. The cartons I checked had hardly any nutrients at all. Almond milk I found to be the most nutritious.

I think almond milk is more easily found with added calcium which us why I was thinking of mixing them because I would also like the higher calories and fats from the coconut milk. Basically I'm curious when people refer to their children drinking coconut milk are they referring to the can with cooking stuff or the carton with the milks.

Flaxseed oil is great in smoothies, so maybe that's a way you could add some brain-healthy fat and calories to whatever milk you choose, or even add it to her food and just do almond milk.
I assume the carton too, to answer your question. |
