It's really like a pre-screening to say maybe you should get further (amnio or CVS) testing. How old are you? That alone increases the risk of having a Downs baby. The reason that amnio is suggested after 35 is that the risk from miscarriage (1 in 300/350(?)) is the same has the risk of having a baby with Downs.

I am 39. I talked to my OB about what pre-natal screening I might want. He said based on my age alone to SKIP the quad test because it would come back as high risk of Downs. If I was really interested in the result, I should go to the definitive test.

My point is that quad test is not a great indicator of outcome but of risk of outcome. IT also has a lot of false positives (results that are NOT going to occur).

Talk to your doc about whether they suggest more testing or not. I also agree with the poster who said 95% is some good odds!
She said she got the ultrasound.

Re: Anyone test for Down's yet?

We didn't get it done and we aren't but if there was something abnormal on an ultrasound we would look further into. I'm not sure if we'd have the amnio or not since it wouldn't change anything but we would want to be prepared.

No testing other than the routine ultrasound for us. It would not change the outcome for us as we would never consider termination so we just dont do the tests.

Re: Anyone test for Down's yet?

Hi Ladies

This is my first post here, as I just stumbled upon this forum this evening doing some diaper shopping

I just wanted to say that this is the one hurdle we (my hubby and I) are currently at in the pregnancy. My GP is pushing very hard for this Amnio test to be done, as is the high risk pregnancy group I am currently seeing. I have done quite a bit of research on the test, but I find what it boils down to is the reason why you would want the test/results. (Rhetorical Questions...) Will the results ultimately decide whether you will continue with the pregnancy? Will you start doing anything differently if the test comes back one way or another? I found that once I sat down with hubby and walked through those hypothetical's... we concluded that we would proceed with the pregnancy anyway... regardless of the results. I'm blessed to even be carrying a child right now, and as another poster mentioned, if the baby is screaming, I will be happy.

Now... to get my doctor's to accept my decision... LOL

I'm sorry your dr doesn't support you.
I have found my dr is really good about what I decide on things and its nice to not feel pressure there.
Welcome to the board!

Re: Anyone test for Down's yet?

So after some thought and discussions with my husband and family, along with some professional advice from a pediatric MD my sister works with, we decided not to go through with any more testing. There's no way we'd abort if we knew the baby had DS so why take a risk with an amnio? Like some one said before, we have a 6% chance. I'm not worried. God wouldn't give us a baby we can't handle! My doctor did make me schedule a detailed 18 week sonogram with a specialist though. Which is fine with us. I'm going to enjoy my pregnancy (as soon as the morning sickness subsides) and not worry myself to death. Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement

Glad you were able to make a decision you are all comfortable with!
Is the 18 wk u/s different than the normal 18-20 wk u/s? I do think they can tell so much now with u/s and I totally agree with your reasoning on why no more testing

Re: Anyone test for Down's yet?

We decided not to test this time. We tested with the first pregnancy because I thought I would want to know to prepare myself. But we have come to realize that you can't really prepare yourself for most things in life.

So, we are not worrying about it and opting out of the test! I definitely would not have an amnio!

Re: Anyone test for Down's yet?

I just had my ultrasound on Thursday. I go in for a routine check on Tuesday, not sure if the results will be back or not. They did say the ultrasound looked perfect so I don't have any worries.

I do, however, need to be prepared. There was another test that she said they could perform that is even more accurate than the First Screening. I don't recall the name but she said it is fairly new. I opted not to because of the good ultrasound.

Re: Anyone test for Down's yet?

We tested and got reassuring news, but I have been in your shoes. With our last son we had a positive test, meaning bad, and were left with the decision of whether to do amnio or not. We decided to wait for the 18 week u/s and see if there were any markers. At that time there were not and we went ahead and waited it out. I admit that until he was born I still played what If but we knew we wouldn't have chosen termination so didn't want to risk the amnio. Had our odds been higher (I read stories of those with 1 in 5 or even 2) we might have gone ahead with more testing, just to know, but for us the risk of loss from amnio seemed greater than the risk of ds. hoping you have the same great results
