testing question
I have a bit of an issue going on with testing and was wondering what you ladies thought. Here the Maternal Fetal medicine center is where my midwife refers me for my u/s. It is a wonderful facility, and I have seen them with all my pregnancies. I went at 7 weeks for an u/s due to spotting issues. baby was fine. At that time they asked me if I planned to do my nuchal scan and I said yes, as I always do. As I was checking out I scheduled that appt......they also scheduled me for a one hour meeting with a genetic counselor prior to the scan....I did not ask for this meeting, nor do I want this meeting. I do not plan to do any further testing. When I asked the receptionist why she was scheduling that she rather nastily replied because your 37 that's the simple answer. I was totally shocked and didn't really know what to say, so I figured I would just leave and call back and take care of it later. Well that appt. is July 30th. I really just want the scan & the blood work that goes along with it, I do not want to meet with the genetic counselors & do not plan on doing further testing. Do you think I can just cancel the genetic counseling meeting?

Re: testing question
not sure, they may require counseling so you know how to deal with the results it may bring...they may go hand in hand.

Re: testing question
I've had the nuchal scan 2 other times and never had the counseling appt. first....they even said the counseling appt. was to offer other tests.

Re: testing question
It would seem to make more sense to go to the counseling meeting if (and only if) they find an abnormality in the initial testing. If you don't want to go to the counseling, they can't force you.

Re: testing question
Exactly, or maybe preconception if you were worried about hereditary issues...but they actually schedule the counseling session *before* the scan...the receptionist said it's basically a pitch for all the other tests I can have done...which I am not interested in!

Re: testing question
okay....I feel better, I called & cancelled the counseling appt & just kept the u/s. The lady I talked to said oh it's just that dr. always does that when people are over 35.....nice, maybe he should try asking them if that's what they want first sheesh. I should probably mention that this was also the very same dr. that tried to push an amnio on me with Gabby even after her quad screen & nuchal came back perfect with very little risk of Downs

Re: testing question
yay! So glad you cancelled it. I didn't realize you had done the u/s without the screening before...silly to push it after 35...i mean offer it, but don't push it.

Re: testing question
Exactly...it's one thing to *offer* tests that people might be interested in, but to just schedule them without even asking is just crazy. From talking to the nurse I got the impression I wasn't the first person calling with this complaint!
