One of our dogs passed away 2 weeks ago

I used to buy the huge box of dog biscuits from Costco and it would take the dogs a good 6 months or more to go thru the box. Now we just have our 1 dog and thought maybe making my own would be more thrifty(she only gets 3-4 treats a day and we broke them in 4's they were big) plus she would take years to go thru the Costco box

I bake a lot so that is another reason I thought I would try this with some fun for the kids as well. I did get some dog treat cookbooks coming from the library but wondered if anyone here has a recipe that they have tried and their dog or dogs liked it

Yes! But, not dog biscuits, just treats. And, I don't know if it's thrifty, probably not. It bakes out into a huge mass and then I cut it into teeny little squares, like maybe the size of a penny. I get a lot of teeny squares and my dogs LOVE these.

A few cooked chicken livers
3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup cooking liquid from the chicken liver (I just simmer them until done)
2 cups oats
1 egg, lightly beaten (depending on the size of the egg, you may need two. I use huge farmers market eggs)

Mash livers with a fork until pretty pasty
Stir in other ingredients
Beat together (I do this in a KA mixer but I can't imagine you couldn't by hand)
Spread together pretty thinly on lightly olive oiled silpat or parchment paper

Bake at 350 anywhere from 15 to 25 mins until like a chewy cookie.
Let cool for around 10 mins
Cut into squares while still warm
Cool completely

I have two dogs, so I eyeball how many they would eat in three days and put that in a baggie in the fridge. The rest goes in the freezer. They will NOT keep long in the fridge.

Occasionally you need to add a touch (like a quarter tsp) of olive oil when beating together your mixture if looks like it needs a little more moisture.

I like to add parsley as well because the green is pretty and it's supposed to be good for digestion.

ETA: I am SO sorry about your dog. I would be devastated. My two are my first babies.

ETA2: My mom calls these "Liver Granola Bars" (ewww) because they turn into pretty much the exact texture and chewiness of a normal human granola bar. I made them up after my younger dog was hit by a car and when he was recovering, he needed some really yummy treats and incentive to get moving again and retrained, but still healthy. These fit the bill.

yes our two dogs were our first babies as well! Thank you for the recipe. Our dogs are Boston Terriers so we only need a small treat/biscuit.

I did try to sub riced sweet potato for the oats. It didn't turn out exactly like I wanted but it was close. I be with a little tweaking you could do it. My dogs like oats and it goes through their system. They eat grain free food and this is their only grain as an occasional treat so I was okay with it.

ETA: I was also going to try with pumpkin since it's the same kind of consistency, and maybe shredded uncooked apple. I just haven't had time to really experiment. I do most of my oven experiments in the winter

I have been searching and found lots using rice garbanzo or potato flour. Some even suggested rice cereal instead of flour. So yes you could do grain free

it's hard not to get side tracked on pinterest! Thanks for the link. I wanted to make pumpkin ones too!

she has tushie problems so the vet suggested giving her pumpkin daily which she loves!

I didn't read all of the responses, but my sister makes her own with sweet potatoes. She slices them really thin and then puts them in the oven on very low heat for a very long time! I think she said overnight but I am not entirely sure. Her dogs LOVES them!
