Re: BIG CONFUSION REGARDING A NEW BORN STASH..
If you are worried about the money side of things (which I have to be), you can buy the medium prefolds and fold them into thirds the width-wise (against the seam) and lay it into a cover. It's a little bulky at first, but it makes it possible to diaper all the way through potty training. Our 2 YO uses the same prefolds and covers with the pf's trifolded with the seams. Our total stash consists of 3 doz med prefolds, 1 doz preemie (for doublers), and 12 covers.

Re: BIG CONFUSION REGARDING A NEW BORN STASH..
If you go to the search feature for this forum (diaper chapper) and search newborn stash, you'll be able to pull up some threads on what people have for newborn stashes. Seems like one pops up every day and I never grow tired of reading them. LOL
Prefolds and covers are the way to go for a newborn. You can trifold and expect to wash covers more frequently, or you can snappi or boingo around the baby and reuse the covers somewhat. The sized prefolds are brands like Diaper Rite, Imagine, Zabi Baby, andof course the Cloth-eez from Green Mountain Diapers. Everyone seems to have a favorite, but they all generally work the same and are sized similarly. There are newborn, small, medium, and large sizes, plus a few brands have intermediate sizes. There's a great prefold comparison thread around here somewhere. For your average newborn, the newborn-sized prefolds are the way to go. For a larger newborn, jump straight into smalls. Two dozen of each size would get you there, plus 6-10 covers. The Thirsties duos and Swaddlebees capris are great two-size systems. If you are just wanting to TRY cloth, buy 2 dozen newborn prefolds + 6 covers + 6 newborn AIO's and then buy the next size up if you decide you like it. By the time they outgrow the newborn prefolds, babies usually fit into the one-size pockets & AIO's. Some people buy larger prefolds and covers, some go into AIO's & pockets. You'll know by then what you want to do. Bum Genius is one brand that almost everyone is happy with in terms of AIO's and pockets.

Re: BIG CONFUSION REGARDING A NEW BORN STASH..
Can't speak to the cotton babies issue, I've been buying from gmd, fsot and diaper junction for some new items. First time cd myself, and will have 2 in cloth. I have been surprised to find some great deals at local children's consignment shops on nb covers...just scored a handful of thirsties, bummis and prowrap nb covers for like $1.99 each! You may have to hunt, but it is possible to scrape together enough to make it work, on a budget, then mix in some nicer new items to round it out.
