I used to think parents of kids with special needs were oversensitive about people's comments, but now two years after dealing with these comments, I definitely get it! This was my fb status the other day-"Dear Well Meaning People-please stop asking me if Lori is eating yet. I don't know when or if she will eat by mouth, but I promise I'll be shouting it from the rooftops if it happens. Also, stop trying to get my kid to eat. We've been working with a team of professionals for over two years on this. You showing her how to bite a cracker or lick a sucker probably isn't going to "fix" anything." I felt much better after sharing that. Oh, then I said stay tuned and next week I'll share my thoughts on political correctness and adoption.

Yes this is so true. I don't think people realize how hurtful they can be. They are too uncomfortable to say nothing at all, so they say something dumb. It drives me crazy too. And we all know that it is so much worse on some days than others...some days I just can't hardly take it.

![]() My son is autistic and has epilepsy. He looks fine on the outside, so when things are all going to hell in a store, restaurant...etc... And people offer free advice i just want to lose my mind. I smile and sometimes explain but it's just easier to ignore them and think evil thoughts in my head

Re: So frustrated!
Hi mama,
I really think people don't know what to say in certain situations...the ones that say they don't know how you handle it everyday probably mean that you are a good mommy and doing a great job with your little one. My MIL always tells me she doesn't know how I do everything I do. I tell her, "I just do." It is hard when a doctor doesn't know what's going on with your babies. My 3 oldest all have asthma... My oldest has had asthma since he was 2 1/2. It got so bad a few times that he was hospitalized for a week January 2010. They didn't call it asthma or pneumonia. At first they thought it was swine flu so they quarantied him. All I know is that his oxygen level was at 89 when I got him to the ER. They couldn't hear any air going through one of his lungs and barely any through the other. He had only been on his nebeulizer for a few days before that so I didn't think he was that bad. He was on all kinds of steroids and antibiotics in the hopital and when he got home. As soon as I took him off the nebeulizer(in March) he had another breathing episode. I rushed him to the drs and his oxygen level was back down to 91 so he was on another heavy dose of steroids. This went on into April. So in May 2010 he had his 11 year check up appt. His face was bloated and he had gained about 10-15 lbs since January. The nurse had the nerve to tell him he needs to watch what he eats and start losing weight. Do you how MAD I was at her for saying that to my son who had been on steroids for 4 straight months prior. I tried to explain it to her and she argued with me in front of him and told me the meds would be out of his system by then. AHHH!!! Anyway some people just DON'T know what they are talking about(even if it is a nurse at the pediatrician's office.)Sorry...just had to vent with you. |

"We're all mad here." |
Its frustrating. I have had people tell me autism doesnt exist, OCD is something all people have, and what gets me the most is "she sure looks normal!". Ugh. Or kids who ask "whats wrong with her!?"
Most days I want to stay home and not see anyone becuase truthfully I am Sick of people not caring. ((hugs))
