How does a Co op work?

Can someone explain how a coop works? Some people are referring me to Yahoo co ops.

There is a co-op section here too...always lots of great things going on

A co-op is a group/bulk order that is usually all shipped to a host who then separates and ships the individual orders. Companies offer great prices (often wholesale prices) for orders like these. There are often different requirements...for instance the group might be required to order at least 100 items to recieve the discounted price.

Sometimes the group pays a %age of the shipping costs from the company to the host, and sometimes the shipping is free. There is usually a co-op fee ($1 or so) to cover the host's costs (shipping supplies and such). Then you pay exact shipping from the host to you. All monies are paid to the host, who then places the order and makes payment.

I run a Diaper Fabric making co-op on yahoo. Oh just be careful, like everything else, there are some bad co-ops. BUt thankfully, there are some reliable ones too http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Diaperfabricscoop/
